GPS devices depend on batteries (and functioning satellites). Too many persons these days have lost the skill of map reading and correctly using a compass.

We will go over the use of a 7.5 minute topographical map, map symbols, contour lines and other features of the map.

Also the proper use of a compass, parts of a compass, how and why it works also how to obtain a bearing (azimuth) follow such a bearing how to obtain the bearing.

How to make the map and compass talk to each other and how to use all this information in the real world!

Things to bring:

Map compass (I will have some to loan)

Sturdy shoes

I have done some recon at this park and it will work out perfectly for this event if you would like to bring food to cook the park does offer grills for charcoal fire, also the Tulpehocken creek run right through it so after the  event if anyone wants to go fishing i'm up for it.

We will be using an area that has access to restrooms (a luxury) the park is also very close to the major highway so finding it should not be a problem and there is a huge strip mall about a mile away.

I also took note of the rules of the park and one rule I disagree with is "no firearms" if you are carrying it's your choice i'll never infringe on that right.  Use your own discretion about this rule. Also no pets allowed.

Very disappointed that we won't be able to make this event. Hubby has to work, son has to participate in the Ride to Remember event for Kyle Pagerly and I don't have anyone to watch the 2 yr old. Really mad because I could benefit out of this. I completely suck with directions and map reading. If I had a sitter, I would be there. I just don't think a 2 yr old would be very patient while I learn this valuable skill. :(

    Brian,
I just caught a cold in the last couple of days and was wondering how I would feel as we approached the weekend. At this point, I don't want to risk giving others germs and getting sicker myself. Unfortunately, I can't change my RSVP because the RSVP's are closed. Look forward to being at another one coming up and being in better health. Thanks.

Any one from the Harrisburg, York or Perry county areas going to this? If so would you be interested in car pooling? I live close to the turnpike and also there is a park and ride lot nearby.
