Short Introduction to Hobby Beekeeping (1 pm until 2 pm)

  • Jul 13, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is the first of three identical classes, all the same afternoon.

John deGroot, the instructor, has taught similar courses when living in Washington state. This will be a 1/2 hour classroom-type presentation followed by a 1/2 hour hands-on 'show and tell' visit in the hive. I have two loaner bee suits and will borrow more from bee buddies.
The objective will not be to make the student a competent beekeeper (which requires 10 hours for the 'drink from a fire hydrant' course).  The objective is to give a short overview of the beekeeper's year, the equipment required, the costs, the required behaviors, what the colony looks like, and how it behaves inside the hive.

The location will be my backyard at  1547 Mission Road, Lancaster, PA. 17601

This event will last 1 hour and be repeated a total of 3 times.  Attendence is limited to 6 persons to give one-on-one time with the bees to each participant.

Hi John, I have always wondered about this hobby. Do you sugest it for someone who is alleric to bees?

Kathy. I recommend against keeping bees if you experience anaphalactic shock. Most people that think they are allergic to bee sting merely have normal - but uncomfortable - responses. Normal response to insect sting includes pain, local swelling, a hard 'knot' at the sting site, and itching. It is nothing to worry about even if the swelling extends 8 inches from the sting location. True allergic reaction (anaphalactic shock) includes difficulty breathing and swelling in the throat - a life threatening reaction. Rapid breathing is caused by fear or anxiety, not anaphalactic shock.

I am not a doctor, so take what I write in that light. You are responsible for your own safety.
