Navigation (Map and compass)

I have had many request for this skillset. We will go over the basics of using a map compass and topographic maps

Subjects taught:
parts of a compass
how the compass works
how to obtain a bearing
how to navigate on said bearing
how to obtain a back bearing
topo map symbols
contour lines
tick marks
parts of the map
marrying the map and compass using two methods

we will also be doing pace counting and the method of keeping your pace and other methods of finding the cardinal points

what to bring:
a map compass
sturdy boots
dress for the weather
snacks and water

The event will most likely last about 2 to 3 hours at which time you should be confident enough to use methods taught to navigate a few legs of a course.

We will hold the event rain or shine and if you have any questions please feel free to email me or give me a jingle hope to see you there.

Good idea! If we could get a larger venue we could even do a "competition" course.

That's a neat idea! It would be fun to actually put the knowledge learned to practical use and see how it works out in "real life" as opposed to just book knowledge.

Excellent meetup. Brian took the time to make sure we all left there with the ability to use a map and compass. Demonstration materials were top notch- instructor provided loaner compasses- free handouts, etc. The group that came out were all like minded people with a desire to learn and asked great questions that built on topics presented. I will be obtaining some maps of my area so that I can put these skills to practice. Thanks!

Very informative and well organized just wish I could have been there on time to experience the whole demonstration, but when I got there Brian was nice enough to get me up to speed that despite being 2 hours late I was able to go home learning a few things. It was also nice meeting who was there and I'll be attending more meet ups.

Tried to get there, but Rustic Park does show up at all in google search or GPS. The location marked out here takes my to a hill in a trailer park community. Please leave a defined address or GPS coordinates next time. Looking forward to the next meet though!

Sorry Tom that you couldn't find the location of the park I do try my best to get the word out about the location with directions it does seem that the map here was wrong also but most folks that became lost or disoriented gave me a call I always post my phone number for all events and always answer it even while in the middle of an event.

Had a good time teaching this class everyone was very attentive and I believe you all will have no trouble navigating using a map and compass just keep sharp and practice the skill

Every time I come out to an event I learn something new. I had never thought to draw the lines of declination on the map, nor how much easier it makes taking a bearing. It was very interesting noting the differences between a map compass and a lensatic compass. Brian was very well equipped. I loved the $16 macro compass! Another nice learning experience was the pace counting exercise.
