Fall Survival Weekend

  • Sep 12, 2014 · 4:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Keely's farm is a 20 acre farm tucked away just outside of Leesport PA with woods, thickets and open fields it has a creek running through it and is a beautiful property for us to enjoy.

Come on out for a weekend getaway to learn and practice your survival skills and learn new skills, the plan is to arrive at Keely's farm on Friday night 4 PM and after, set up camp and be ready bright and early Saturday to have some fun.

This weekend will be loosely organized what I mean by that is we can go over any survival or primitive skill the majority of the group would like to do be it primitive fire, making primitive tools, shelter building, water collection and purification (primitive or modern) trapping and snares, wild edibles, whatever skill set the group wants to do this is your weekend to tell us (organizers and instructors) what you want!

UPDATE:

We do have somethings planned for this weekend first thing planned is to have a class on firearm safety and once we all understand the safety of firearms we will be using a black powder rifle and be instructed on how to load this firearm and how to use it safely also how to reload ammo.

We also will be doing primitive and modern fire making in depth and be instructed on the making of nets ... nets are very useful in a survival situation they can be used to trap, fish and even carry gear.

What you need to bring:

Tent (unless you make a primitive shelter or sleep under the stars)

Bed roll

Extra clothes (sturdy boots extra socks and rain gear)

Cooking and eating utensils

Food: freeze dried, MRE, canned, or whatever you want remember if it must be cooked you must provide your own utensils

Paracord

Full tang fixed blade knife

Any fire starters you want to try out

canteen, camelback some kind of water vessel (2 gallon of water per day per person for cooking and hygiene)

Flashlight, headlamp

Medication (if you need it)

Gloves, Bandana

Personal Hygiene materials (wet wipes, toilet paper, toothbrush, ETC)

There is an outhouse on the property for our use also a creek runs on the property that we can make potable very easy.

Please respect the property as if it was your own clean up your trash and don't leave anything behind (remember take pictures and leave only footprints)

Of course we will take all precautions to avoid any injuries , however you do participate under your own volition and at your own risk. There is always first aid, EMT personnel on site just in case.

Children under 18 years are sole responsibility of the parent and MUST REMAIN WITH THAT PARENT AT ALL TIMES WITHOUT EXCEPTION. Please and thank you

Also please no no no alcohol, Thanks

When arriving at the farm please park in the area marked parking.

Hope to see you all at this one till then stay safe and healthy!

I am so angry. I had been looking forward to this weekend...since the last weekend! But a boss with no compunction about the use of hostages (so to speak) and an early arriving roommate, conspired against me. Will there be a winter survival weekend? :) Oh and James, I still want that stuff I mentioned. All of it!

    September 14, 2014

    • James

You read my mind, I am wondering about a winter weekend my self! And I sent you a message, so just shoot me an email when you get it, thanks ;)

Let me look around for a venue see what I come up with ...thinking maybe a 24 hour event instead of the whole weekend just to get a taste of being cold ...

My favorite part was James' Orienteering Course. Oh, and seeing all my friends. Oh, and getting my annual shower. Oh, and the many birthday well wishes. Oh, and the great food. Oh, and all the fun times!

Everything went very well and I would like to thank James for all his knowledge and help also John Z for teaching and helping where help was needed and a huge thank you to Stacy and Brian for allowing us the use of the property for this event without them this event would not be the same! This past weekend was thoroughly organized and well equipped. I found the experience to be enjoyable, something for everyone - weather your style of learning is hands-on, through discussions, or reading you walked away from the weekend retreat knowing something more than what you started out. It was a TERRIFIC weekend! Learned much, made new friends, and got out of my 8x8 cubical :)

Thank you all for a fun filled and all around great buscraft weekend! As usual I learned much, much, much from Brian, John and James (the only mystery is how much of it will be retained in my head :)

Ugh, I'll be there tomorrow, probably. Have some people stuck in Morocco and I have to play Superman. :( I'm not showing up at midnight again! :)

Hey folks. Cant wait for this coming weekend, should learn a lot, and teach some as well. I will be bringing my store again, so if there are any special requests, please let me know. I'll be bringing some of my more relevant/popular items.

Like last time, I plan on using the least amount of gear as possible, and utilizing as much of "mother's" natural gear as possible. Any one is welcome to join my primitive (with a twist) camp style ;) See you there

And in MOST CASES that is RARE!! What we typically encounter is having our COMFORTS SURVIVE. With that in mind, I enjoy comfort, and that's why I packed what I did, but if we took the title "Survival Weekend" to heart, we would show up with just the clothes on our back if that lucky. All you NEED to survive is air every three minutes, water every three days, and nutrition every three weeks.... (can be shorter or longer depending on situation of course) Hahah, food for thought anyway, thanks for the comment ;) Cant wait to see ya there!

Food for thought? I will just have to think about that in three weeks.....lol

I'm going a lot lighter than I did last time for the most part.

I am not going to make it. :( I have too much homework and a big exam on Monday-also 4 papers I am working on. I am bummed. I tried to get it completed this week, but it just did not happen. I wish everyone the best weekend! I will miss y'all! Much love.

I may stop out to visit. ...just cannot commit for weekend.

This is going to sound really dumb but, um, knife sharpening? :) Especially serrated blades.

    1 · September 6, 2014

    • Erik M C.

It just seems so basic but it's a skill I realized I'm not well versed on. Especially using non-standard sharpeners (like finding a suitable rock in the wilderness to use). 'Dumb' was a poor choice of words on my part. 'Basic' would be what I really meant.

      1 · September 7, 2014

    • John Z.

I'll bring a couple sharpening options. Hones are all over the place, you will be surprised.

Sept 12 is my 52nd birthday. I'll be baking cupcakes over the camp fire. You guys are going to love this crafty exercise!

Brian I won't get there till Saturday afternoon. I have to work in the morning. Is there anything you need me to bring or anything you need help with.

      I'll call you this week.

Wow! August is almost gone already. We have such a good time on our camp outs. I love learning new things as much as I love teaching things. We are planning to do a whole fire course, from the basics of fire through friction fire. After that we have a whole lot of time to explore other topics. What other things do folks want to cover while we are enjoying the out doors?
