Come on out and let's get lost!  At this event we will be going over the basics of using a topographical map and compass.

What we will be covering

Parts of a compass

Why a compass works

How to use a compass

Obtaining an azimuth (bearing)

Navigating on said bearing

parts of a topographical map

How to marry the map and compass together

How to determine declination

How to judge distance using pacing

Using pace beads

After we go over the basics we will have set up a navigation course to practice these new skills (or refresh what you already know)

There is ample parking and enough seats to go around.

There are public toilets.

Please note there is a $3 park fee per vehicle. Meet at the top of "the drive" at the nature center". We may move to the hawk observation area later.

Questions?? please feel free to contact me via email or John Zeron via email.

Thanks and see you there.

Had a great time today ..just remember to keep up on this skill if you don't use it you'll lose it.

It was great to see folks again. Learning to make pace counting beads, take and make bearings, running the course, and marking lines of declination were all fun. OK, I helped set the course, so I didn't actually run it. Everyone made it through the course so I think we did a good job learning to use our compasses.

I just joined. I hope to make it tomorrow but may not be able to attend the whole time. I believe parking is $6 for out of state (DE) residents. I like my eyes. I may need a new picture.

It's a 24" x 36" waterproof quad. It shipped yesterday USPS Priority. So who knows when it will actually arrive?
