Apologies for the quiet period - having a bit of a summer break. It's previously been requested that we have some pre-meeting reading, and so, for our reconnection in September, I'm proposing this:
Alain de Botton's 'Consolations of Philosophy' http://www.alaindebotton.com/philosophy.asp. I've not yet read it yet, but have ordered it from Play.com (used) for £1.74. I chose it as it introduces the reader to an array of ideas from prominent philosophers:
'Socrates, Epicurus, Seneca, Montaigne, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche are read for the light their work can shine on certain great universal problems, among them, unpopularity, poverty, inadequacy, lovelessness and timidity. The book amounts to a guide to wisdom - as well as to the practical utility of philosophy.'
So that should give us plenty to talk about - re the human condition - as we enjoy a coffee at Cafe Utopia.
If you prefer not to (or don't have time to) read the book, still come along and join in the conversation!
