Paradoxes and philosophical mind-bogglers

Greetings folks!

UPDATE: Quiz night at the Mews means we might need to move on. Please phone/text me on[masked] if you arrive a bit later and we have changed locations. Very sorry!

As people seem to rather the like the recommended reading thing, here's another one: 'Can a Robot be Human' by Peter Cave (one of the tutors on the module I'm just starting). The book promises "puzzles and paradoxes which introduces some of life's important questions with tales and tall stories, reasons and arguments, common sense and bizarre conclusions." Which sounds like it should provide us for plenty to chat about.

It's available on Play, used, for under £2 (and they do free delivery) if you fancy it. You don't need to buy or read the book to come along to the meeting - it's just something to kick off the conversation.

Happy philosophising and hope to see some of you later in the month!

Best wishes,

Sherry x

Thanks Sherry and everyone for a great evening. Yet again we fail to clear the muddy waters of a philosophical topic! (And actually make those waters even murkier - which is a good thing I suppose?)

I would say so! And I liked ending with a round of what people had concluded. Good to find out where people's thoughts had taken them, and why. :) x

BTW, if anyone is interested in Western analytic philosophy, you can grab Bertrand Russell's The Problems of Philosophy for free. It is available in various formats from here:

Excellent evening with a fun crowd, thanks Sherry for organising. Lara reminded me of another excellent film that poses the Robot/Human question, AI. Look forward to the next one.

It was a great evening of lively and varied discussion. Sherry did a superb job of chairing and keeping us on topic. It was great to meet everyone. Very pleased there are so many philosophically-minded souls in Southend. It was fun and I will try to come again despite the distance

Putting up loads of messages in the hopes you see one of them! Lynn's informed me there's a quiz night at the Mews, so we might (most probably will) need to move. I'll be there for 8pm to meet people and we'll hang around for a bit to catch everyone. If you're coming late and we've moved on, text/phone me to find out where we are[masked]

Very sorry about this. I'm viewing it positively - our first philosophy pub crawl! xxx
