The Fat Tire 40 is a marathon mountain bike race that takes riders on a perimeter lap encompassing McDowell Mountain Regional Park. It includes nearly all of the Competitive Loops, Pemberton Trail, Scenic Trail, “Yet to be named new trail”, Granite, Bluff, Coachwhip, and Dixie Mine. In 2013, the Fat Tire 40 will be a one lap race that is 41.5 miles in length and has about 3,000 feet of climbing.
Start/Staging: Riders will be staged in groups of 48 riders based on their finishing times in a short (6 mile) time trial that will be held on Saturday March 16th. Each group of 48 riders will be sent out on course separately with a 30 second gap between each group. All times will start when the first group is sent out on the course.
The Sport and Tech loops on the Competitive Track will be used for the Time Trial.
You DO NOT have to do the Time Trial. If you do not do the Time Trial, you will be staged in the order you registered after all the riders that completed the Time Trial. The only exception to this general statement is for Pro/Category 1 licensed racers. If you have a current Pro/Category 1 license Male or a Pro Female and you did not do the Time Trial, you will be staged at the front of 2nd group. If you are a current Category 1 Female and you did not do the Time Trial, you will be staged at the front of group 3.
