Ocean Point to Damariscove Island

Saturday 26 July 2014, 09:00 - 16:00
Organizer: Rene

This will be a trip from Ocean Point launch to Damariscove Harbor located at the Southern end of Damariscove Island. The distance to Damariscove Harbor is approximately 5 miles. There are two 1/2 mile crossings that can have current velocities between 1 to 2 knots. The nice thing about this trip is that the island acts as a wave/wind block and shelter can usually be found on one side of the island or the other. The harbor mouth has some rough waters caused by a ledge named "The Motions." Although it can look a little wild from the wave action on the ledge, access should not be a problem. The harbor was once used as a Coast Guard Station and the old building is still there. The Southern end of the island also has a small museum, old building foundations, walking trails and a scenic lookout (camera). The views are terrific because even though the paddle is sheltered you are around five miles out to sea. The Northern end of the island is an active bird nesting site, but our course will not disturb them. The island also contains a pond, which makes up a large portion of the Southern end. I rate this a level two under normal summer conditions. We will mostly hug the shore and the crossing are short. Some conditions can change this rating and I will evaluate those conditions closer to the trip date.

Tide: Low - 11:50 AM

Oops, have been diagnosed with Lyme and apparently the antibiotic does not allow prolonged sun exposure. Or so they claim. Doctor thinks this counts as prolonged so I am going to spend the day in the basement or somewhere. I bet it will be totally beautiful.

I cannot make it, and have scoured this entire page looking for the means to remove myself from the "going" category in order to make room for someone else. Can someone please advise? Usually there is a button to change, but....?

Gus, Have you found a ride yet. If not, I can take you if your boat will ride comfortably in foam saddles.

The reason I sent Sarah to the help page was so that she could fine tune her email notifications as far as the system allows. Frankly, I don't the limits of the system myself because I get everything (how else could I coordinate my outfit with Jenna's if I don't know what she's wearing. I strikes me that the best place for this discussion is on the Discussion(s) tab/board. So if any folks have general interest questions they may want to post them there. N.B. There is a feature for Organizers that allow us to request systems changes from the folks that run Meet-up. Should you have such a recommendation (as Sarah does), please post it on the Discussion(s) tab/board. I interpret Sarah's request to ask for a feature where only time/put-in/cancellations are forwarded to members who elect to receive those and only those..

      I want a pony

      2 · July 22, 2014

    • Sarah O'Brien C.

It's easy to get a pony, Rene, but a pony who can sit in a kayak is much more expensive.

Well, nothing should be denied to a philosopher queen, but it might. Ideally it would be up to the sender to decide if something is of general interest. If, for example, our esteemed leader Jim sends out a notice saying that a trip is canceled, or that each participant should bring him a bottle of single malt, I would naturally want to receive that so that I can get to the liquor store on time. On the other hand, some questions--is it okay if my jacket does not coordinate with my kayak-- are perhaps not of general interest. Personally there are questions I might want to ask the leader that I would not want everyone to read (!!) but I am not in a position to say I want to receive no notifications whatsoever--it depends on their import..

For those all important things like, should you match your purple kayak, to your purple drysuit, to your purple hat, to your purple nails, and hair you can simply send a private email, that everyone would not have to read. For whether you chose to receive notifications, you'll only receive those for conversations which you've either responded to, or for meet-ups you've said you'll attend. Hope to see you on the water again.

mine is simple: account --> email & notifications --> unclick if do not want

    July 21, 2014

  • Jim V.

Sarah, nothing is denied to a Philosopher Queen. If you scroll to the the very tippy-top of a Meetup page (I think it's true for any page but definitely from the home page), on the right hand side you will see 3 things--your picture, an icon of a bell, and those three dots that I believe are called an ellipsis. Click on the dots and you will be brought to a help window. Insert the word "notifications" in the window and press "enter" or hit return or whatever your computer requires to make it acknowledge the request. In the response page you will find myriad ways to change your notifications including "go the heck away and don't bother me any more". I hope that helps.

    1 · July 21, 2014

It would be nice if there were a way we didn't all receive all these notifications. I don't know if this Meetup site allows for that.

spoke too soon - it comes up with the 2nd file (first is ASCII) but does not print out. The printed output just says "Statement.pdf" and is mostly a blank page. I tried but failed to post a screen shot from my file preview to illustrate this.

    July 21, 2014

    • Rene

I have provided 2 links. One if directly at meetup and one is at totally separate web site. I provided the second link to avoid any kind of possibility that the link download could be a meetup issue. If you still have a problem with the download please message me your direct email and I will email it to you. :-)

      July 21, 2014

    • Carolyn E

I downloaded the new pdf, looks fine on the screen but only a few lines will print (and print preview shows this rather than the full file). Will ask my tech-savvy son to look at it. I can get one from Michael, for some reason his iMac works with the original SMSKN file yet mine does not.

We have a large group. I would like to solicit help from 2 experienced participants. One to be the sweeper, One in the middle of the pod and one of us would lead the pod towards our destination. :-)

Gus I hope someone will give you a ride. I only have one set of cradles on my car (can't carry 2 kayaks) :-(

If the forecast calls for flat seas then this should work out but if the seas are average bump then some of the crossing or rounding up of Damariscove to enter the 'cove' could be intimidating.
