Kayak camping weekend (hosting Idaho paddlers) Casco Bay

  • Winslow Park

Staples Point Rd, Freeport, ME (map)

    43.810071 -70.128288

  • Launching from Winslow park towards islands that allow camping. There are many options on where to camp that will be influenced on how many campers (tents) will launch. We'll paddle, find a spot to pitch a tent, padle some more or chill out at the campsite. Next day we can pack up and paddle to the next destination or keep our campsite and venture out for a day paddle. Sunday we'll pack up and return to Winslow park before noon to catch the high tide at the put in.

I have not received another e-mail from the Idaho paddlers since (probably May) so it's not at all guaranteed that we will host them for this trip.

    Excerpt from email we received:

I'm hoping that some local kayak-campers would be interested to host a trip Aug 8-11 (or part of) that I could tag along for. Visiting from Idaho for work and added recreational time on the end of my trip. I have flatwater kayak and SUP experience, and after a few days in the Apostles in July will have a bit more sea kayak experience. If I'm too novice for this group, then I could try to spend the weekend hiking instead. I appreciate your suggestions.

No worries....I'll just tag along and decide when/where I'll need to turn around to head back.

Deb, I do not think we will know where we are camping until we know where other people are camping.

Yes...if you know where you'll be camping I'll look at a chart to figure out what makes sense.

Sure Deb. No problem. You may need to gauge at which point you need to turn around (if necessary)

I'm interested in paddling on Saturday however, I won't be able to camp over. If I can join as a "day paddler" that would be great...if this doesn't work for this trip please let me know.

We'll, I certainly don't think you're too novice for the group. We have all levels of paddlers. You should, however give careful consideration to all risk factors, particularly how far off shore you go, the distance for crossings, the temperature of the water, etc. When jammed for time, there might be a tendency to press ahead when waiting for better conditions. I'm sure you'll have more specific questions when your destination is chosen. There are many places to camp for someone of your ability. As the time draws near, you'll get many recommendations. Here's one (Basin Island).
