Looks like today is a day for something other than sea kayaking. Alas and alack.

Let's keep an eye on the weather. I'm seeing 3 - 5' waves predicted for Sunday, and at least one webpage calls for a small craft advisory. If we don't want 8 miles of that we could use the day for rough water practice just offshore of Kennebunk. Perhaps this will be a group call on the dock.

Janet, what do you think? Everyone except you and I have bowed out. My cell phone is 207/604-4240. Per haps we should talk around 7:00 - 7:30 AM to decide? Another paddle option might be from Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport to Cape Porpoise and back.

Gerry! Looks like today is not a day for kayaking anyplace, with fog and waves and these thunderstorms in the forecast. I might join the trip off Orrs Island tomorrow. We'll catch this trip another time, and thanks for the July post - it was a great suggestion. So, I'm out. Time for the newspaper and a pot of tea.

Sorry, the noaa weather is off-putting. With the fog, wind and all, I think I'll bow to the input of more experienced paddlers.

NOAA graphical forecast is not good-fog and 0 visibility at 8am strong gusts in afternoon. Since I don't have a chart of the area I'm not going.

Gerry, Is that launching at nine or meet at 9? I'm driving up from Derry NH and 9:30 launch would work better for me?

Just my two cent's worth - the paddle from Old Colony Beach to Cape Porpoise is an open ocean paddle with shoals and rocks that can cause pop up breaking waves which can get rough in bigger conditions. Also, there is no easy place to pull out until you get up to Cape Porpoise; once you start up the coast you are committed. This is one of my favorite paddles and I wanted to sign up, but am not liking the forecast. Be safe!

Thanks very much Liz; that's important information.

It is on Ocean Avenue, directly across from the Colony Hotel at 140 Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport.

Not sure how or why I am listed as the event host. This event was organized by Janet Robinson. But, parking is tough at the Colony Beach, so I recommend getting there around 8:30 AM for a 9:00 AM launch. The Colony Beach is directly across from the Colony Hotel on Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport. I, personally, have paddled many times in Cape Porpoise Harbor, but have never paddled from Colony Beach to Cape Porpoise. This is an ocean trip with calm waters once we reach Cape Porpoise Harbor. I'm hoping we get some experienced paddlers out for this event. I just received my Greenland Paddle and am looking forward to this paddle.

Janet, I'll leave it up to you and the group as to where we go.

      Sounds good. See you Sunday!

    Maybe...

    • Gerry D.

Janet, you started this. Are you only a "maybe"?

      August 28

    • Janet R.

No, I'm confirmed. The "maybe" was in regard to your speculation on a coffee invitation from George and Barbara. Somehow these replies get out of order. See you Sunday.

      August 29

  • Gene

I'm a maybe at this point for Sunday.

  • Gerry D.

Who knows, maybe George and Barbara Bush will invite us in for coffee?

Looking forward to it. Just received my new paddle - a Greenland style paddle, and very anxious to try it out.

Anyone interested in doing this Sunday, August 31 if the weather is okay? I'm not a formal leader but this looks like a good trip.

Janet, the launch time should be around 8:30 AM or 9:00 AM for no other reason than to guarantee parking. It will be low tide in Cape Porpoise, but that should be fine if we are not taking out from Cape Porpoise, but rather returning to Colony Beach.

      August 28

    • Janet R.

Okay, why don't we say 9 am. Can you post the meeting location? I'm not formally a member of the club yet.

      August 28

  • Gerry D.

I'm hoping someone will step up to lead this trip. This launch site would not be tide-dependent, but we'd need to meet and depart early to guarantee parking. Just about any weekend works for me. A weeknight also works.

I'd like to attend as well. Been too long since I've paddled that area or with you, Gerry.

Based on a date that I can make, this is a paddle I'd be happy to join.
