Annual Picnic and Kayak Rodeo

Join us for our annual potluck picnic and kayak rodeo (some kayak-related activities and competitions) for fun, prizes, a chance to meet fellow paddlers, share stories and enjoy the day outdoors overlooking the the beautiful Maine coast off Freeport. We'll bring paper plates, cups, utensils, and charcoal. You bring a favorite dish or something to grill and those who are of a mind to will work it off on the water. Please note that the park frowns on open containers of alcohol.

Thanks, but I called and they said they had had it, but that now it was "gone." Apparently they have them where anyone can walk in and grab what looks good. :( So, back to LL Bean.

Picnic was great. Food was outstanding. The paddle was short but offered potential for a longer trip in the future. Sarah - I know a PFD was turned in at the gatehouse.

MISSING LIFEJACKET! When I unpacked my stuff after the picnic I found I had no lifejacket. I definitely had one when I was paddling, so must have left it on the ground somewhere. It's yellow, size small I think, if anyone has discovered an extra among his or her things.

Did you try calling the Park lost & Found?. I know someone else left a marine radio and water bottle and both were turned in.

Anna and I had a great time yesterday. Want to thank all who made us feel comfortable and one of the pack! Great group that we hope to be part of for a long while. Doug- thanks for the tips on the water. Much appreciated! Looking forward to next paddle.

Wife and I plan to join the fun. I definitely plan to go for a paddle and maybe play in the water near shore.
This would be our first opportunity to make the picnic but I have heard that there were some competitions in the past. I heard there were challenges related to number of rolls in a minute, fastest reentry, standing and paddling and others. If others remember any of these activities I would like to hear about them. Maybe we could give some a try.

We definitely had all of those plus a race with no paddle, a race with 3 'yakers per (single) kayak, a cowboy entry race, etc. Not everybody participates but it was a hoot. The big wild card this year is Nananda who may come off the injured reserved list. In her rookie year, she stunned everyone by winner the cowboy entry contest. Because of lax judging, though, she was not disqualified in other competitions where her "take no prisoners" tactics were seen by some as over the top. Personally, I thought she should have been thrown out of the competition, barred from competition for 2 years, her kayak confiscated, burned, the ashes buried and the earth salted so that nothing ever grows there again. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Oh dear how can I possibly defend myself against such accusations? I simply sprinkled in a few handicaps as needed (preemptive cheating? Robin Hood identity crisis?). I am now out of practice with my kayak capsizing and thus may no longer be able to defend my title for cowboy reentry.Huge opportunity for Mike, who has coveted this title for years. Might he need a personal handicap? Hmmmm. I probably won't be in the water on Saturday unless it's really cloudy, but who knows. Beware ticks.

Will there be a demolition derby contest?

Looks to me like the Harraseeket River or Moshier Island are likely destinations. These both look like enjoyable level one paddles. A little mud is good for the complexion!

Do we bring food to share? Because if I make a potato salad there is no way I will eat it all myself!

The boat ramp at Winslow is only inaccessible for kayakers for two hours on either side of dead low tide. Within that 4 hour period, it's a mud slug at best. However, if high tide is at 11:00, we have until 4 PM before we have to worry about it.

High tide is just before 11:00. My general rule is that it's OK to get in and out 3 hours before and after high tide but the truth is, with a little walking, you can manage even at low tide--it's just not as convenient. I believe the parking fee is $3 and the parking fee plus put-in fee is a total of $5.
