Monthly WordPress Meetup!

Our Meetup schedule is...

6:00pm - Mill around, eat some pizza, have a beer, meet people, have a good time!

6:30pm - Orders of business, state of the WordPress.  This will be general WP updates, and any information that needs to be given out to the group.

6:45pm - Question for the group - we'll have a round table discussion about a question sent in by a group member.  Have something you want community feedback on?  Send it to me!

7:00pm - Becoming a WordPress Developer: Session 1 - This is the first of a series of talks that Sam will be giving to give people a grounding in WordPress development.  We'll go over how WordPress works, the file structure, hooks and filters, etc.

7:45pm - Q and A / Break

8:00pm - Rocco Tripaldi will be talking about sending email with WordPress.  Ever wondered why all the emails from your site end up in the spam folder?  Ever wanted to send out emails to thousands of users?  Learn how to master email.

8:30pm - We're done here...  Help clean up, then go home, or go on a pub crawl with some other WordPressers.

If you want to give a talk (big or small), or there's a topic you'd like to hear talked about, email Sam, and we'll get you on the schedule!

We are currently looking for a food sponsor and a venue sponsor for September.  It costs $100 to buy the food, or $100 to sponsor the venue, and as a sponsor you get 5 minutes to present your business to the group, and you'll be featured on this page for 6 months!

I enjoyed last night's meetup as well. The talk Sam gave was a bit over my head. Is there anyway we could go through setting up that environment slowly? I already have MAMP set up. I also was wondering about the difference between the two environments he toggled between. Why do you need both a development site and a local site? Is this handy when there are multiple folks working on it?

Also, I'd love to know more about how everyone goes about choosing their themes. David was kind enough to spend several minutes helping me after the meeting and gave me a wonderful array of options to choose from. I just wonder what criteria others use when selecting.

Thank you all for sharing what you know!! I learn so much by attending.

I enjoyed last nights meetup but most of what was discussed was way above my pay scale, which isn't much. I started using Word press several years ago and I am mostly self taught through trial and error, you tube and reading articles and blogs. However I did take a class year at Portland adult education last year and that was great. My goal is to be more creative with content and understand widgets and plug ins and how they fit into templates. I am not a programmer but knowing where and how to install a plug in into a html header can be exhausting if you don't know what your doing.

I just heard about this Meetup yesterday, and was hoping to make it down from Orono, but it wasn't enough notice. I'm very excited to meet some folks who are knowledgeable and interested in WordPress, and if anyone has a good summary of the information from tonight's talks, or any other tools for WordPress rookies, I'd be much obliged to hear about them. Thanks!

I am tentatively saying yes. We are having major work done on the house tomorrow. If all goes well, I'll make it.
