Monthly WordPress Meetup!

In an effort to accommodate different user types, we're going to try a few different models for our Meetup.  As before, we'll begin with a welcome (and pizza), move to a 20 to 30 minute talk, and then separate into different user groups.  The groups will be dependent upon who attends, but will most likely be divided by Developer and User.

Our speaker will be Chris Moreno. Chris lives in Kennebunk and owns a business called My Local Leads. Chris will be giving a presentation on Local Search Engine Optimization (Local SEO) with a particular emphasis on Google Places (sometimes known simply as The Maps) and of course WordPress.

If you were ever curious about how Google decides which lucky businesses get to appear at the top of those Map listings (thus generating lots of phone calls), and more importantly what YOU can do to help your listing or those of your clients show up there, this Meet-Up is for you. Chris is the author of Winning the Local SEO Game: A Step-By-Step Guide for Contractors and has spoken all over the country on this subject.

If you'd like to give a talk (big or small), or there's a topic you'd like to hear talked about, please contact Stephen or Sam and we'll get you on the schedule!

Hi everyone - glad to report that I found a theme I think will work for me. So, I'm looking to register a domain name with either GoDaddy, HostGator, or BlueHost. Anyone willing to share success/horror stories with any of these? My biggest concern is missing some weird fine print issue that would cause me problems down the line.

Remove the plugin manually using FTP and upload the latest ver using FTP. On r done then try activating it. You will not get any issues.

Very good session. The Local SEO info was great. The follow Q&A was very informative, helps explore areas one wouldn't go on one's own accord.

I will not be with you tonight, but if I was, I would be sharing this great resource about accessible WP theme development. May only be of interest to some of you, but the article provides lots of rich information about the process and how relatively easy it can be to develop an accessible theme. Hey, I might even try it! Here is the link to the article. Have a great meeting!

You should try to attend one of the Meetups. There are always "noobies" there with lots of questions..

Great. I'll be there. I have a good idea of what I want, and some sample website models I like. Just need help figuring out how to get there.

This isn't specifically WordPress oriented, but maybe a talk about current formatting do's and dont's... should you center text? Should you use tables? Should you use "click here" links or how should you direct to more info? etc.

    June 9, 2014

    • John B.

Hi Sally, Some of this was covered in my presentation a few months ago regarding accessible web design and WP. To answer some of your Q's: Centering text has no real value if the point is to highlight a title. Always use a Heading (H2, H3, etc.) as this adds semantic value to the content in addition to visually highlighting. "Click here" is definitely a no-no. Links should always be embedded in text that makes sense independently. Low vision folks who use screen reader technology need to know were the link leads. And lastly, Tables should ONLY be used for DATA. Data may be numeric, but is could be textual. Do not use Tables for layout. Hope this helps.
