Happy new year everyone! After a couple of month's break, we're back with an awesome event set up by SMYP member Justin Campbell (Thanks Justin!). This one is going to be at Preble Street Resource center in Portland where we'll be giving a few hours of our time to serve dinner. Here is a description from the volunteer coordinator of the center and what we'll be doing:
Our organization: Preble Street meets urgent needs 24/365, advocates for change, and creates solutions so youth, adults, and families who have no home and nowhere else to turn will not go hungry, will not have to be on the street when they are tired or sick or cold, will not have to live in fear and danger, and will have a chance for a better life.
Specific to the work volunteers will be doing: We serve three meals a day at three separate soup kitchens: the Resource Center, the Teen Center, and Florence House. At the end of each day we’ve served an accumulative 1,000 meals, and we do that 365 days a year! We ask volunteers to come in for 3 hours at each meal so that you can participate in the meal's preparation, service and clean up. There is kitchen staff on hand at every meal.
Volunteers in the kitchen cut, assemble and sauté food, prepare salads, assemble bagged lunches, clean up from meal preparation, monitor ovens, set up condiment table & dining tables, staff the serving line, support the serving line, wash dishes, scrub pots and pans, sweep and mop dining room floor, etc.
We are limited to 15 members for this event so if you sign up please make sure that you can make it. I look forward to seeing a few members and giving a little back at this next event!
