Intro to Warhammer 40K - 6th ed.

This Meetup event is official. The Business Center (Group Study 1) room on the second floor of the Waldorf West Library has been reserved.

On March 9th (previously feb 20/27. see notes below), I would like to invite everyone to get the gears of war rolling again at our first-ever introductory class for Warhammer 40K, 6th edition! Classes are set to begin at 1:30PM and will run until 4:30 PM. Topics to include the following but are not limited to:

1.) Intro to the Warhammer 40K Universe - backstory and a very brief intro to warring armies
2.) Intro to the Warhammer 40K Game - game basics (nothing too heavy)
3.) Intro to the Warhammer 40K Hobby - modeling, painting, terrain building

For those of you who are mildly interested in 40K, this is a great event for you to come out and see, in the flesh, what it's all about! Short of showing up, there is no commitment involved. If you decide: "Meh...not for me." no problem!

For those of you who want to play 40K but are overwhelmed by the game and the hobby, this event (hopefully eventS) will be an invaluable step on the road to becoming fully versed in all aspects of the 40K universe (I do mean ALL aspects: rules, modeling, painting etc..). We will take this class at your pace and fully explain everything you would like to know about 40K.

For those of you who have played 40K before but stopped for one reason or another, this event will be a great opportunity to re-learn the game, from the ground up, under the new 6th edition rule set. A decent amount of things have changed from 4th and 5th ed.

Advanced players are welcome as well. I know you guys don't require a rundown of the rules or the hobby and I know it would be painful for you to sit through a class that does just that, but it is nice to have the knowledge base in the room in case we run into a question that is not easily answered. Experience is always welcome!

Thanks Nick for the invite however it appears everyone in the meeting group plays 40k. I have WHF Island of blood starter set ( already purchase some new units for High Elves) and was looking to find somewhere local to play. Are there people in the meeting group that play Fantasy?

Not sure if this meeting room is still active. I live in Clinton Maryland and would like to get started in Warhammer 40k. I'm considering purchasing my army this weekend and would like information on where to play in my area. Any help would will be appreciated.

It was great to meet everyone. I'm looking forward to our next event. I'm happy to be one of the teachers ( or at least provide beginner armies) and I'll brush up on the 6th edition changes.

Thank you everyone for coming out on Saturday! I'm sorry things got a little chaotic there, we have so many different skill sets. I can see its going to be a little tough to teach a single class. I am excited though to see so many people interested. I'm thinking we might move these classes to a 1 teacher/1 student system to make sure everyone gets the attention they need.

It was great meeting everyone. I look forward to the next time we can get together to play.

I'm going to try to make it but I don't know for sure. Please do not prepare a darn thing for me. I can watch over someone's shoulder-- look, listen, and learn.

I’ll bring a 500pt SM army, Rule book, the SM & Eldar codex. Does anybody know where I can find a PDF of the 6th ed CSM codex. If I can find that Ill also bring a CSM army to.

So far so good. Only one we haven't heard from is Jay.

  • Karl K.

For the meet up on March 9th, those who can bring a 500 point army should do so. The army should consist of an HQ and Troops, no need to get fancy yet. Also, those that are coming and can bring an army should let Nick and I know, that way he and I can pull together armies for everyone else that does not have their own as of yet. Please let us know when you can.

I know a lot of you have made room in your busy schedules for this coming Saturday and I'm really sorry. I screwed up big time. I didn't realize it until this weekend but I double booked this coming Saturday's class with a family outing. I kept pushing the event back and I completely forgot about it. Can you guys forgive me and can we move this class to next Saturday (March 9)?

    February 25, 2013

    • Nick

Well, if you can make it Alex, we'd love to have you. Sorry that I changed the date around on you like that. If this goes well, I am hoping we will have more classes as people join in.

This is kind of an impromtu hangout so that's why I'm not posting this as a meetup event. If you are intereted in joining us either to play or to hang out for a bit, send me a message for more details.

I found a group of 40K players in Lexington Park last week and got in a couple of games of 6th edition. I still plan to show up Saturday to particpate and help out. Do we need any terrain, modeling supplies, etc? Is there anything I can bring?

    February 25, 2013

    • CJ

      Where at in Lexington Park?

I will be bringing my 15 year old son with me. He wants to learn.

I'm a long time 40K player that is relatively new to the area. I've just moved from Binghamton, NY where I was a founder of B.C. Adeptus (http://www.bcadeptus.com). Unfortunately I haven't even seen the 6th edition rules so I hope this will be a good event for me to catch up on them and meet some local players.

Welcome aboard man! We're glad to have you aboard! I, personally, am stoked you joined up. We've been working on getting a solid group of 40K gamers here for awhile but it's been slow going. Regardless of edition changes, your experience is going to be a great asset to us. What army are you running with? Do you have any secondary armies?

      February 15, 2013

    • Will

Thanks for the welcome. I have a large Imperial Guard army and a pretty good sized collection of Necrons too.

So I visited the library last week to take a look at these study rooms. They are basically what I would call "fish bowls". There wont be a whole lot of privacy because each one of them is walled in by a significant amount of glass and they share that wall with the library's common areas. Is everyone comfortable with this? Now, one of the rooms is kinda out of the way and seems to be a bit more private than the others. I'm headed back there today to confirm the room number. You guys want me to shoot for this one?

    February 15, 2013

    • Will

My old club used to use library rooms to play. I have not issue with it personally.

      February 15, 2013

    • Nick

I couldn't care less about gaming in public. Sometimes I think it serves as a great way to advertise. People walk by and are innately curious so they will stop and ask what you are doing. However, some people are a little uncomfortable about playing/discussing in public so I just wanted to make sure.

      February 15, 2013

  • Nick

The room I am currently looking at: Small Study Group 2 (15 max occupants) is open on Saturday the 22nd. Would that be a better day for everyone?

    February 8, 2013

  • Nick

You know, I just thought of this... For those of you guys who run Tabletop RPGs, the Warhammer 40K Universe may be an interesting variant to use in a game or two. 40K has a nicely fleshed out backstory and plenty of warring races to make more than enough games from. You might have to do a little conversion here and there but it could be worth looking into. Just a thought...

Come join us if you're interested! :D

As for a date, I didn't know if the 20th was too soon so I am putting in the option for the 27th so people can organize/reorganize their schedules. Also, I do not officially have a room reserved for us at the Waldorf West Library so I haven't put a location up yet. As soon as we nail down a date and I can confirm that we do, in fact, have a reservation, I will change the meetup location.
