That was a fun day (but I was a tired boy by the end)! I was really pleased and proud to be a mere part of it.

Thanks to everyone for making it so enjoyable!

      Nice job, Jeff.

    • Jeff B.

Thank you Danno! I appreciate the kind words.

You folks from the North o' me certainly know your way around planning and executing a fine fine uke day. My thanks for making my trip from Brookline, Massachusetts well worth the adventure. Next Saturday, Aug 23, we are having a 1920's day in the park....with a few hours of uke-ing and doing a play-along of some familiar (and less-familiar-but-will-become-favorites) tunes... visit the Meet Up page (Ukulele Union of Boston) or visit us at 1:00 at the Christian Herter Park along the Charles River on Soldier's Field Road. next Saturday.

It was great to meet you Chuck, thanks so much for coming and adding to the adventure! All the credit goes to Michael and Ben Chung for this event. My daughter lives in Brookline, who knows, I may take you up on that offer!

    great time

If it's okay, I'm taking the liberty of posting the performing order. Here goes:

1 ) Me, Jeff Bellin, to start it off
    2) Art, Johnny, and June
    3) Jon Violette
    4) Danno Sullivan
    5) Alex Krauth
    6)Chris Curtis
    7)Chuck Goldstone
    8) Dick Ruel
    9) Gary Rutstein and Claudia Combs

If everyone took about 5 minutes, not including introduction (I'll try to limit the intro to less than 15 seconds), we'll get everyone in with their two songs who have two songs prepared (Not everyone does). I recommend you perform your songs at home and time it. If you can do them in 4 minutes, you'll have a little time for patter with the audience. If we start running too long, I'll have to put a limit on it to one song. I'll be at the side of the stage. Just take a quick check with me on time to make sure we have time for your 2nd song.

The other thing to practice, for those not used to doing this -- LOVE performing for your audience. If you're having a great time, we, the audience, will too.

Is there any kind of plan B in the event of bad weather?

    August 13, 2014

    • Jeff B.

Yes. It would be to move the bad weather to another day.

      August 13, 2014

  • Chris C.

OK...stupid question time. Is this picnic a bring your own kind of thing or is there someone doing some cooking?

    August 12, 2014

    • June P.

Hi Chris... I'm sure there will be a food vendor there but in the picnic spirit, I will be making a sandwich or two to bring along. See you there!

      August 12, 2014

  • Jon V.

Hi I really still want to sign up for the open mic...I'd be playing while my guitar gently weeps by jake shimabukuro and some other improv/soloing so I was wondering is there any chance I could still play? Thanks I'm flexible about pretty much everything. Might shoot you an email

    August 10, 2014

    • Jon V.

      Ok jeff hows this:

Up next we have a teen from bedford nh who likes to jam to anything from nirvana to jake shimabukuro, here's jon violette

Short and sweet - oh and I'm gonna be playing while my guitar gently weeps which'll probably take up all my time but if not then some improv or something.

      Thanks a bunch!!

      August 11, 2014

    • Jeff B.

That's good. I can use it.

      August 11, 2014

  • June P.

    August 11, 2014

  • Arthur (Art) M.

When does the SNHUG play...as a group? Does anyone know the approximate time yet? I know the open mic starts at 1:30 p.m. Do we know the order or performances yet? I have friends and family attending who are interested in the SNHUG performance and a couple of open mics. Would they need to attend the entire day?

    August 3, 2014

    • Jeff B.

      Bribing the MC can't hurt.

      August 3, 2014

    • June P.

      August 4, 2014

    August 4, 2014

      August 3, 2014

  • June P.

Hey everyone... due to the number of performances and other scheduling considerations, there will be ONE Open Mic session, probably around 1:30. Please meet me by the shell at 1:15! If you haven't provided your bio and song selection, this is also a reminder for you... thank you!

    July 26, 2014

    • Gary R.

      Great....thanks

      July 26, 2014

    • Jeff B.

June, can you change the top of the page paragraph to reflect that there will be only one Open Mic?

      July 28, 2014

  • Jeff B.

Please read Part 2: If you are new to the instrument and new to playing in general, that's okay. If you're performing because you lost a bet, that'd be fine (and funny, to boot). If you consider it to be an extension of your spiritual side and want to use playing the ukulele to explore world peace, that would also say something different about you. In other words, write something that says something about the next 5 minutes or so we're going to spend with you. Make sense? If you're not sure, or you'd like to run it by me or get some help on it, you can message me privately.

    Jeff

OK Jeff, How about something like this...

Our next act comes to you from Windsor, VT. He's been playing the Uke for about 18 months now. It's the only instrument he's ever played (unless you count recorder class in the 2nd grade but he was kicked out of that class because he couldn't sit still). He enjoys skiing, biking and golfing. Give it up for Chris Curtis everybody! :o)

Feel free to edit this any way you see fit. I'm easy to please....

      July 28, 2014

    • Jeff B.

That's a great one, Chris. And as an actor (and your MC), I promise to bring life to it. Just make sure it's entered in the place where it belongs. I personally am not collecting them. I believe that there is a spreadsheet where they are kept, or June Pinkham is collecting them. By Open Mic time, I hope to have a list of performers, in order, with each of their bios so I can introduce them in a rousing way.

Hello all members of SNHUG ! I have finally broken the ice and attended the Friday Night Jam 7-25-14. I had a great time seeing people in person instead of computer magic. I apologize for being a half hour late and missing out on good information and music I am sure. I am really impressed with the location and large space for group meetings. I think the projector and computer setup is a great tool to keeping people on the same page quickly. It sure beets my old barbershop rehearsals with the director's pitch pipe and members unorganized stacks of music. I hope to eventually meet every member and talk shop. The Open Mic was awesome as everyone did a swell job. I have to wear reading glasses and I think I am on the border of needing distance glasses so I hope I did not seem rude sitting up front as I could see the projection of the songs on the wall with no problem. I felt like a kid at the Drive In Theater back in the sixties. I only have maybe a sentence left, so I will say Thank's.

I was told I was starting at 10am. Has that changed? If so what time will I be performing on open mc. If youu need more info let me know. thanks

    July 26, 2014

    • June P.

Hi Gary, yes schedule is not final yet, but I'll keep you posted. It will be early afternoon per below.

      July 26, 2014

  • Jeff B.

Please read this, Part 1: The purpose of the bio is for me to give you a bit of an introduction, kind of like what you'd see at comedy shows or another type of entertainment. So what would be helpful is something that reads in the 3rd person and is short and snappy, and gives off the sort of tone that would help to give a feel of who you are.

For example, for this purpose, I might write for an MC about myself: "Jeff, a professional actor and musician, adopted a ukulele for the very first time while in Hawaii about 10 years ago. Now ukulele co-dependent, Jeff likes to explore the traditional and non-traditional on the instrument."

This intro gives off a comic vibe while indicating being a somewhat serious musician.

I was hoping to fit in 2 songs in my 5 minute stretch. It's a theme and they belong together. Both from the classic Jackson Browne album "Running on Empty".
    1. The Road
    2. Stay

I guess I'm ok with morning or afternoon.

Hi Chris! Excellent choices, and great taste in music! Now I really hope you come to play with us soon! :) BTW, do you use Facebook? Feel free to look me up. I'd love to be friends!

      July 19, 2014

    • Jeff B.

Nice, Chris. It'll be fun. I think, if you end up running over by 30 seconds, we won't be using the hook, the trap door or the ejector catapult on you.

Alex Krauth, from Eliot, Maine, has been a member of the Southern New Hampshire Ukulele Group since November 2013. While attending high school, Alex studied ukulele with Woody Allen (not the actor)and loves the instrument's bright sound. Since then, she has played and sung at parties, coffee houses, and community gatherings throughout the Maine and New Hampshire Seacoast and even had the opportunity to play Hawaiian music with a local ukulele group in Hawaii on two occasions! When she's not strumming and singing for fun or in jam circles, she can be seen teaching private piano, voice, and beginning ukulele lessons to students of all ages in her home music studio. She is also the new elementary chorus director at Brixham Montessori Friends School in York, Maine. Alex says, "I live and breathe music, love all styles, and believe it has the power to inspire and unite all people."

    Songs:
    1. Island Style - John Cruz
    2. What's Up? - 4 Non Blonds

Okay with performing in either session!

    July 11, 2014
