Madre Tierra III - An Introduction to Permaculture

This spring, Great Basin Permaculture will host an Introduction to Permaculture Weekend on Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7. Guest speaker Larry Santoyo is an environmental design expert and leading light in the worldwide permaculture movement. The three-day event will include a full day of instruction (including a real-life design challenge,) a hands-on installation project, and a networking mixer where those interested in permaculture can connect. Landscape designers, city planners, downtown revitalization advocates, real estate agents, students, homeowners, businesspeople, and others interested in interacting with their environment in a more authentic and beneficial way are encouraged to attend.

Guest speaker Larry Santoyo is the founder of EarthFlow Design Works based in Los Angeles. Residents of urban Las Vegas, situated in the Mojave Desert ecosystem, will particularly benefit from Santoyo’s expertise in eco-urban design and sustainable land-use planning.

In an increasingly polarized political and economic climate, permaculture serves to unite diverse individuals and groups around a common purpose: the smart, efficient, and respectful use of resources. Permaculture takes a “whole systems” approach to critical issues that at first seem unrelated, such as environmental conservation; water, energy, and food security; and personal health and wellness. This approach requires a simple shift in focus from distinct design elements to the connections among them. Categories that might seem dissimilar or opposed– such as domestic design and community planning, architecture and agriculture, functionality and beauty all are reconcilable from the perspective of permaculture.
