Deer Mtn via PCT Extreme Long Distance Hike

This hike is another good conditioning for the summer backpacking season. We will all be leaving from Sierra Gateway Southlake at 5am and heading east on Hwy 178 to Canebrake Rd-this road is a very rough dirt road and a high clearance vehicle is recommended but a car can make it but you have to drive real slow, I will be going slow as I always do on dirt roads-then we will start the hike at Kennedy Mdws CG for the 6 mile one-way hike to Deer Mtn. I will be staying overnight to bag Ball Mtn on Sunday and your all welcome to do the same.

What to bring: Headlamp with extra batteries, lots of water and food

Elevation Gain: 3268ft

Elevation of peaks: Deer Mtn ( 9418ft ) Ball Mtn ( 9256ft )

Skills: Class 2 (Deer Mtn) Class 2&3 (Ball Mtn)

WARNING: THIS IS A STRENOUS HIKE AND FAST PACED, ONLY FIT HIKERS PLEASE AND NO BEGINNERS AS THERE WILL BE NO SWEEP. THIS IS A CONDITIONING HIKE TO GET READY FOR THE BACKPACKING AND HIGH PEAK (14ERS) SEASON.

Your mileage is severly understated. Lisa and I hiked from KMCG yesterday to the Haiwee Pass junction. That was a 16.5 mile round trip. It would have been 19-20 to complete the entire Deer Mountain hike. We started later than we should have for the time we had to work with. Will go back probably in the fall and try again - it is getting too warm for that hike this season now.

Hey Steve, I might not make it now. If you don't see me at the trailhead don't wait for me.

Hey Steve, I'll be driving up Friday night to car camp at the Kennedy Meadows Campground. I'll try to park close to the PCT trailhead. I'll see you in the morning. I'll join you for Deer Mountain on Saturday but I'll have to return home Saturday night so unfortunately I won't be joining you for Ball Mountain. I look forward to seeing you.
