Wheel Meadow Grove Easy Day Hike

This is an EASY to MODERATE hike, on trail, suitable for families. The hike is 4.3 miles one way, or 8.6 round trip. If you only want to hike one way, we can arrange to leave your vehicle at the second trailhead so you don't have to hike back. The elevation gain is negligible, making it one of the flattest hikes you'll find in the mountains! After driving to Camp Nelson on Hwy 190, we'll hike among giant sequoias, visiting the Wheel Meadow Grove, the McIntyre Grove, and possibly the Bear Creek Grove. There are other connecting trails we can explore if anyone wants to hike a little farther.

I will meet Bakersfield hikers in Porterville, at the Olive Ave. Starbuck's, at 8 am. To get to the meeting place, you must continue on Hwy 65 PAST the Hwy 190 turnoff, to the Olive Ave. exit. Once you exit, turn right and the Starbucks will immediately be on your right. Bakersfield hikers can arrange carpooling in the comments section below.

I hope we will be hiking by 9:30 and be done by early to mid afternoon.

This is the first time I will be doing this hike, so I'm afraid I can't give many more details. It will be an adventure!

Hi everyone. The weather is looking nice for tomorrow, with a high of around 67 where we are going. I will see some of you in Porterville and others at Quaking Aspen parking area.

Alice, if Bako people meet at Hodel's at 0700, will that be fairly timely to meet you at 0800?

Google maps says an hour will do it from Hodel's to Starbucks in P'ville.

Donna, let's just meet at Quaking Aspen instead of Camp Nelson. Have you ever hiked this trail before, and do you know where to find it at Quaking Aspen? We will probably be there about 9:30 or a little earlier.

Alice, I have not hiked this trail. I do have the Jenkins guidebook. Quaking Aspen sounds like a good meeting place.

Alice, my husband and I are coming from KRV. Is there somewhere at Camp Nelson we could meet you? Or, we could start at Quaking Aspen and meet you on the trail.
