Redwood Canyon Loop- Kings Canyon

Basics: This is a moderate loop hike among Giant Sequoias in King Canyon National Park.  Although I have never visited this particular trailhead, I have heard good things about it!

Lots of options: This hike has an even easier option for those who wish to take their time and limit their miles. Bonus: yes, there is a peak to bag for those who are wiling to put in 4 extra miles (Big Baldy).

Selling Points: Largest of all sequoia groves, vista points, fern-lined creek, historic logging site, a meadow

The Plan: Those carpooling from Bakersfield will leave the Flying J at 6:30am.  We will meet anyone else who wishes to drive straight to the Redwood Canyon TH at 9:00.  The moderate hike follows a 10 mile loop called the Redwood Mountain Loop.  If some members are feeling tired they can shave off 3 1/2 of these miles by taking a shortcut back to the cars.  For those who wish to hike Big Baldy in addition to these ten miles, you will need to make sure you carpool with like-minded people because the TH is a short drive from the Redwood Mountain Loop.  Not to mention the spanking pace you'll probably have to walk the loop in.  I would like to have everyone back at the cars by 5:00 to allow time for us to get down the mountain and home at a reasonable hour with a possible stop for dinner.

Stats:

Loop: 10 Miles, TH elev 6,200', Total Gain 2,300'

Big Baldy: 4 Miles, TH elev 7,500' , Total Gain 982' (piece of cake!)

Short Loop: 6 1/2 Miles

I haven't hiked for a long time so it was a good one to start with. The huge trees were amazing.

Although it was way too hot today, this trail has real potential for future hikes in the spring or fall.

Alan- I'm happy to use my car for carpooling but live by Tony in the NW. Can you hitch a ride to this area? Who else is carpooling from Bksfd?

    1 · July 11, 2013

    • Jill W.

Coleen, quite a few people will carpool from Bakersfield, that's why made the meeting spot the flying J at the Merced Ave. Exit. We will all meet there.

Great :-) I was confused there for a while... Want sure if that had changed

Bring rain gear, everyone - there's a chance of thunderstorms. Also it will be warm so make sure you have plenty of water, at least 2 liters or more PER PERSON.

Anyone still leaving from the Flying J tomorrow ?

    Hi Jill,

I already sign myself up at the last spot today. I am wonder if I could not find the baby sit for Waverly, and I might have to cancel the last minutes. BTW, how do I sign up her as a guest? She is only 8 years old. Can she join? Look forward to hear from you.

Alan sorry I won't be able to make the hike after all.

    July 15, 2013

    • Alan M.

No problem Rosaura, Carrie said she could do it thanks for the offer and see ya on the trail sometime.

      July 16, 2013

  • Diane F.

I'll have to pull out too. Bum knee didn't hold up for a short hike, so this one's out. More rest and maybe next time. Have fun!

  • ana m.

I have to take care of some personal business so I will have to bow out. Sorry to miss the hike.

    July 15, 2013

  • Maribel

Is there a reason why I cant take a guest? Are we strictly limited to 20?

    July 15, 2013

    • Jill W.

That is a good question. If we weren't hiking in a busy national park, it wouldn't be such a big deal. However, the park frowns on groups bigger than 15 because it leads to overcrowding. I'm pushing it with 20. People do tend to drop off the list the week before so stay tuned. I encourage your guest to sign up and join the waiting list too.

I'd like to attend this hike so I did an RSVP. However I am without a car right now so would appreciate it if I could get a ride from someone that lives close by the SAMs club in the southwest. Ill help with gas and I have a state park pass so everyone in the car will get in free.

SW Bakersfieldians, I can vouch for Alan. He's a good guy. No worries picking him up and bringing him the rendevous spot at the flying J.

    July 11, 2013

  • Andy E.

Next time, I'd like to join up for one of these someday soon! I have a soccer tournament that day

    July 11, 2013

  • Jill W.

Forgot to mention in the write-up: 1) there is a $20 per vehicle fee to enter Kings Canyon unless you have a park pass (one more reason to carpool) 2) Please post, as Rose did, requests/responses to carpool from locations other than Bakersfield so we can organize our northern friends into carpools. 3) No dogs allowed in the National Park. Fido stays home.
