Slide Mountain Lookout post turkey workout on Black Friday

Distance: 11 miles RT, out and back

Elevation Gain: 2560'

Rating: Moderate, with combination of paved road, dirt road and trail.  No bush whacking or scrambling.

Threat of rain will not cancel this event.  Closing of I-5 due to snow will. Click HERE for Pyramid Lake weather forecast.

We don't need to shop...Let's go hiking , that's what we need to burn off the extra mashed potatoes and that second piece of pie! I have just the solution! Slide Mountain, the hike everyone only seems to want to do once. While this hike offers great views of a number of local lakes and a great workout the main reason to do this one is just to point it out to people as you drive by and tell them you hiked up to it.

Slide Mountain Lookout tower is accessed from the end of the Templin Hwy which is north of Santa Clarita off of the I-5. The trail is accessed by walking on a closed portion of the Templin Hwy for a bit over a mile and then it's a fire road and trail to the tower. You can see the tower from the 5 freeway. There will be some amazing views from the top.

PARKING PASS REQUIRED As with all National Forest Land a parking pass is required and can be purchased at Sport Chalet, Big 5 and other places. $5/day or $30/yr. You will get a ticket here.

Directions: From Bakersfield: Take the 99 to I-5 south. On the 5 freeway go about 20 miles south of Gorman and exit at Templin Hwy. Go right, and then right again (north) at the end on what Mapquest calls the Golden State Hwy. Take this to the end, this is Frenchman’s Flat.

Don't forget the outhouse at the summit. There are also amazing views from inside the outhouse (no door last time I was there).
