Red Mountain Day Hike

Come Hike Red Mountain (5261'), a desert Peak.

Hiking Category

Pack your cowboy hat and prepare to travel into the wild west. This class 2 desert hike is 6.5 miles RT with an elevation gain of 1750'. This is a Sierra Club HPS Peak and though the distance isn't great and the elevation gain is minimal we will be hiking cross country and on dirt roads.

Hiking Plan Red Mountain (5261')

We are parking at the junction of Trona Rd and Steamwells Rd. [masked], [masked]). We will hike due east off and on the dirt roads until we reach the major ridge. From there we will follow the ridge SSE to the summit [masked], [masked]) where we will relax and eat lunch. After enjoying the view and signing the register we will head back the way we came.

*There is NO water on this hike - plan accordingly*

Ghost Towns

If hikers are interested then they can stop and checkout the Ghost towns or any sites there of historical significance. Red Mountain, Johannesburg, and Randsburg are all close by the trailhead (links below).

Class What?

It is important that we all understand the rating system that organizers use on their hikes. For my hikes I generally use something close to the Yosemite Decimal System. I have seen many different versions of this system, and many are adamant that their version is the right version and etc.. The best description I have seen of the five classes that seems to encompass the most general idea may be found at Climber.org under ‘Five Classes of Climbing Difficulty’ ( click here ).

hey everyone ... everything looks great for tomorrow! Expect some sun in the morning with clouds afternoon. We were hitting 70+ a few days back but expect temps in the low 50's and maybe some wind. Overall tho quite nice.

Also, for anyone who forgot, the super bowl is tomorrow so if you forgot, set your DVR.

If anyone would like to carpool from Bakersfield, I can drive three others comfortably, or ride with and provide gas money.

Cool. Where do you want to meet? & what time? I'm happy to carpool:-)

The Starbucks at Weedpatch (Hwy 184) & Hwy 58 makes a pretty good meeting place. Meet there at 6:45 am and on the road by 7:00? I have room for two more if there are others that want to carpool.

Do you have an estimated travel time from Bako to the meet point? It looked 2 to 2 1/2 hrs. Thanks!

    January 21, 2014

    • Penni H

It took us 2 hours. Allow a lil more time for pitstops or traffic.

I really don't know, but that's probably a good guess. Bakersfield folks are welcome to setup a car pool if they want. I'm on the east side so times for west side folks would be wild guesses by me.

I just want to make sure everyone understands this hike is class 2, with a large chunk being cross country AKA across rocks and gravel and steep hills. If you have bad knees and or ankles or want good old trail hiking, this won't be for you. Thanks!

Dan, I think I am going to have to back out for now. I was hoping for a miracle but I am going to need to move slower than I would like. See ya soon

I understand. If you hurt it before it heals you will miss even more including the summer. See out there soon.

We went out to Red Mountain today. We only did 2 1/2 miles..but most of it was straight up hills. What an AMAZING view up there. I'm looking forward to this hike even more. :D
