Several people has questioned the "dutch cleaner mine" part of the hike so I am taking it off the official hike info because you are all just confusing me... but still plan to visit mines with "white stuff" you can call it whatever you like.
These mines are not the really big Cudahy mines but there are more than one.

Due to terrible weather forecast for Saturday, the hike will be on Sunday march 2. instead.
sat: rain/snow/20-30 mph winds 47 degrees,
    vs/
Sunday: partly sunny 10mph winds 54 degrees
Hope everybody is still able to make it.
    Same meeting places and times.

    February 27, 2014

  • Glenn G.

Maybe the hike should be moved to Sunday!
Besides the rain, the wind is a problem.
We will see what Fridays update says.

Between Tony's truck and Jan's high clearance car, I think we can all squeeze in for the few miles on the dirt road if we need to. I'll bring bungee cords if we need to strap somebody to the roof.

    1 · February 23, 2014

    • Gina

We will bring the SUV, but that bungee cord on the roof kinda sounds like a fun time to me :-)

I am keeping a close eye on the weather forecast for sat. There's a slight chance of snow/rain showers but mostly cloudy. s/w wind around 15 mph, high near 51.
Make sure to check in on Friday for final update.

We can make Home Depot here in Tehachapi a carpool meeting place, Mill st. exit right next to the 58. Then I can lead the way to the Burro Schmidt turnoff, it's hard to see if you are not familiar with that area.
I don't have a high clearance vehicle so I would like to get a ride with somebody that does. If not all can get rides we will just hike the extra distance.

      I'll have my Tundra 4wd.

      February 22, 2014

    • Tony S.

Alice, I'll edit the map to reflect the meetup location as the Tehachapi Home Depot parking lot.

      February 22, 2014

  • Jan G.

Oh, BTW, the map link shows the meeting place at the Ridgecrest American Inn best value suites or some such. I assume it is the intersection of either 14 and Garlock Rd. or the intersection of 14 and the road that is to the north of RR Canyon visitor center?

    February 22, 2014

  • Jan G.

I have a high clearance 4 WD but it only holds 2--3 if it's not too far (no seat belts for passenger 3 and they have to straddle the gear shifter! ;-)

I don't know yet if we will have any high clearance vehicles. People sometimes sign up last minute. Check back in on Friday. But there's a good chance we can make it in a reg. car, just don't know till we get there. Those roads change with the weather and it's suppose to rain next week so who knows. Sorry I can't be more specific. If all fails we will drive down the road a bit and hike around Red Rock Cyn. There are great places still to be explored there.
Either way, it will be an adventure of epic proportion.
    :-)

I just reread the description and found my answer. Two miles walking on dirt road each way could bring the total hiking distance to 11 1/2 miles if I calculate correctly. That with the elevation gain puts the hike beyond my current capabilities. Sorry, but I had best cancel my reservation. Better to determine that now than while in the midst of the hike. Happy trails...

    February 22, 2014

  • Pam

If we don't have high clearance vehicles what is the hiking distance on dirt road till we cut out cross country?

    February 22, 2014

Go south on 14 and shortly after 178 west you will see the 2 large billboards on either side of the hwy. and just past that is a dirt road on the left. There is a wooden sign that says "Burro Schmidt tunnel " but I am not sure if that is visible coming from your direction. We are meeting right at that turnoff so just look for cars at 9am. There's not much else there other than sand and brush.
You can google earth the area and you can actually see the two billboards and the dirt road.

The snake is a rosy boa.
I can't guarantee we will see either creature out there.

    February 19, 2014

What a joy to see photos from my old stomping grounds some 35 years ago when I lived in Ridgecrest. I recognize the house rings and chuckwalla, but the snake I am unsure of. Does garter snake sound about right?
