The Jar Trail

The infamous Jar trail is a very steep, strenuous trail which is located at the mouth of Kern Canyon and is used by workout freaks and local mountaineers as a training hike. The hike is about six miles, maybe a bit more, with a possible elevation gain of around 3,000 feet in three miles depending if we go up to one of the several nearby peaks in the area.

Important note: This hike is limited to a total no more than six hikers including myself and is only recommended for those who are in great hiking shape. The views from the upper ridges of Kern Canyon and the Kern River below are some of the best in the area. The hike up and back should only last three to four hours at most and we should be back around noon. So,....if you are looking for a great workout on Monday morning, please join us for my favorite hike near Bakersfield.

The Jar Trail basically traverses the ridge line of the mountain in the foreground

Bradley, you can do the Jar trail any old time. I recommend going on Bill's hike to the coast on Saturday.

Hey I was wandering if anybody would be willing to show me the jar trail this weekend??

Thanks for showing us this steep local trail, Bill! It was a beautiful day, not too hot or cold, and I got a lot of exercise in a relatively short hike. It was tedious coming down the trail but worth it! Nice to meet Andy, Patricia, and Jan!

I'd like to come to see where the trail starts if that's OK. I'll do my own thing, so you guys go on ahead and knock yourselves out. I mainly want to look at rocks along the Kern Gorge Fault at the canyon mouth. The ones I've seen along the highway look really strained and distorted...I would like to see how pervasive that deformation is.

Jan, the Road Side Crag is 5 minutes from the mouth of the canyon- TR, 3 routes various levels. I'll bring my roap and gear. We can climb after the hike if we connect, feel energetic and have time.

"So,....if you are looking for a great workout on Sunday morning, please join us for my favorite hike near Bakersfield." Is it on Sunday or Monday?

    January 15, 2013

    • Bill B.

Andy, thanks for bringing this "mistake" to my attention...I cut and pasted this from a previous jar trail hike...the hike is on Monday, not Sunday.
