Fall Camp out and presentations (CABINS AVAILABLE)

Based on the feedback from our first camp out we have scheduled one for this fall ... YES YOU CAN RENT THE CABINS FOR THIS TIME FRAME. I have rented the Blue Jay cabin from I believe 77.30 for the weekend. We will try to set up an agenda for presentations as soon as possible and then post here. Stay tuned for more info.

We were going to try to rent the cabins at the end of the area but there is not a full comfort stations nearby and one of those cabins had already been rented.

Most enjoyable. Great company & I learned some new skills. Many thanks to all the presenters. Regrettably, I was on-call for work so could not camp overnight. However, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the 15 hours I had on Saturday.

Hopefully Ron, better timing might be worked out for the proposed winter foray and you can stick around through the night(s)!

On another note I want to thank our out-of-towners for making that long drive to participate! You guys were GREAT and I really hope we see you all again soon at another one of these!

I plan to be a lot more "refreshed" before starting my next fire demo, that's for certain!

This whole campout was the most fun I've had in years, my boy can't stop asking when we'll all go camping again (yes, he's badgering me) and I can't wait until we do it again!

I want to thank those (especially Bob and Terri) who helped me get set up when I came in so late and half out of my mind with exhaustion, and Doug and Ariel for putting up with me stealing all their plates and attempting to steal their dog.

I also want to thank everyone who not only put on a presentation, but who so eagerly participated in all our little projects!

Thanks Chicken Man, I agree. Thanks to everyone that organized, gave workshops, and attended!! It couldn't have been successful without everyone's participation. Looking forward to the next...

If you misses this, you missed one of the best activities 21st century can offer. We all learned a lot - those who attended seem to have bonded better than even I imagined could happen - and even distant members blended perfectly into the fold as though we were all long, lost friends. In short, the future just got a little brighter.

Anyone who'd like to make a belt, you'll need to bring 100ft. paracord, a buckle, and a "K" crochet hook . We'll be making a belt easily undone for emergency use, no untying.

    September 19, 2013

    • Chicken M.

      Do these need a buckle?

      September 26, 2013

    • Bob E

Yes, a belt buckle. I plan to steal one off an old belt.

      September 27, 2013

  • Terri E.

    Yep.

I am all set to teach my land navigation class, I think this will be a great intro for beginners and a valuable refresher for others. If you have a lensatic compass please bring it, I have one to teach on but you may get more out of the class if you have your own equipment inhand.

      September 19, 2013

  • Doug

Yeah I would like to change my class to a night land navigation so I will need everybody to meet at 0400.....just kidding!

    A tentative schedule:

Friday: Arrival, setup, meet, eat, greet. Saturday:

0800-ish - Doug will be leading folks in a basic land navigation course.

1000-ish - Chuck will be leading folks in his basic wilderness survival presentation.
[masked]-ish - Lunch, lounging, fussing about the weather and bugs

1400-ish - POSSIBLE wild edibles presentation

1600-ish - Jamie will be leading a sharpening presentation (tools, blades)

    1730-ish - Chow

Evening - Terri will be demonstrating (bring cordage and play along) making bracelets or belts with 550-cord.

Right now this is entirely flexible. For those cooking with Dutch ovens, fires and cooking will need to be established earlier than 1640 in order to meet cooking times and preparation.

These times are not mandatory or concrete; weather and attitudes depending, we'll need to be flexible.

If no one else volunteers I can do the paracord braclets ... not hard ... you need about 12 ft or paracord and either a plastic buckle from walmart or we can make the ones with no buckle and single color. Single color bracelet give you a single longer piece of paracord

I plan on making dump cake as a dessert in one dutch oven and maybe monkey bread in another

I'm still trying to figure out what I want to make. I'd like to make a stew or a chili on Saturday, but that doesn't necessarily have to be Dutch oven for the chili.

I was eyeballing some recipes yesterday for different things, simplistic stuff more for the sake of fun and Dutch oven learning than any "survival" mumbo-jumbo.

A suggestion was given for those bracelets and belts we see made from para-cord and other forms of cordage. I've no idea how to do it but I'm sure someone does. If anyone would like to do this, post it so that people can bring their preferred cordage/colour.

James plans on a presentation for cooking with a Dutch oven. While it would be great that those who wish to follow along bring Dutch ovens of their own, people participating might want to coordinate ahead of time so we don't end up with ten Bundt cakes.

James suggested a website for Dutch oven research:

At last night's meetup it was proposed that those who are putting on any kind of presentation POST here on what they're presenting AND what materials will be necessary in the event anyone would like to follow along during the presentation.

I know there's been discussion of some land navigation. It would be good for the presenter to post about what materials he will have on hand AND what kind of compass (if any) people might wish to obtain in order to practice the techniques given.

I believe Jamie has talked about knife and tool sharpening. If he has suggestions for obtaining the right kind of whetstone(s) that would be some good info.

I'll be bringing the boy. I honestly don't know how he'll weather things, he can be gung ho OR finicky and fussy. I reckon we'll see.
