SWCMG IT Professionals - Technology Awareness Update Meeting

SWCMG IT Professionals - Technology Awareness Update Meeting

This meeting will focus on need to know technologies outside of the Mainframe. We are very fortunate to have Ron Kaminski as our Featured Speaker. Ron is considered a Guru in Capacity Planning and brings a unique perspective to understanding IT on all platforms. In keeping with the theme, MP Welch will provide a survival guide to the Windows 8 interface . This is a must attend event for our IT Professionals who want to better understand all of the current IT  technologies in use today. Come for all or part of the day, enjoy lunch, and socialize at our new IBM meeting space at the IBM Innovation Center in Coppell, Tx.

10a-11a Opening Session - Ron Kaminski

"It’s not always what you say…"

All capacity planners face challenges in getting our firms to understand and act on what we discover and our communications styles have to adapt to different corporate cultures to be successful. Join Ron as he shares what tricks and techniques he has learned in 28+ years that will help you get your discoveries noticed and techniques to greatly shorten the time between “issues discovered” and “fixes deployed”.  The session will be loaded with real examples from large scale distributed environments. Ron will cover not only the content of your messages but also other techniques that change your message from “just another nag in the pile” to “We need to act on this now!”.
Ron will end with some consulting where audience members share “less than successful” communications examples and we use what we learned to devise better ways for the future.

11a - 12p Session - MP Welch
"Windows 8 - Be Afraid, but not too afraid... "

Windows 8 has an updated interface which will be in all of our futures whether we like it or not. This session provides tips and techniques for  understanding and using  the Windows 8 update to minimize frustration and enable productivity.

Noon - 1p Lunch (provided by SWCMG)

1p - 3p FEATURED PRESENTATION - Ron Kaminski
"Linux, and Windows, and VMWare, oh my!"

What are the key metrics, tools, and techniques for Capacity Planners, Performance tuners, and Application Architects? This session will be a survival guide for those who have had limited experience with one or more of the Open Systems technologies which are becoming a larger and larger percentage of Enterprise computing environments.

Great meeting! Very good to see SWCMG back up and running. Nice to see old friends as well. Looking forward to participating in future meetings. I saw several things in this meeting that I can take back and use immediately. I found the first presentation to be very interesting. Lots of the points on how to deal with your 'customers' apply to lots of different jobs, not just Cap/Perf. Gave me some really good ideas to take back to my team. Thank you all for being there.

This was the most relevant CMG for my job that I have ever attended. We are not on Windows 8 yet, but it was good to have an overview. I very much enjoyed Ron and his sense of humor, but most importantly, I got some great ideas that I could take back and use immediately for analysis and presentation. Having been tasked with reducing DASD I/O by 10% before the end of the year, this was a very timely subject ! Hope to hear Ron speak again soon! Wouldn't he be a great addition to the IBM-North Texas Campus? Lunch was awesome, Barry. Thanks for hosting, IBM.

Great meeting. Ron had tons of insites into capacity graphs for distributed systems. A lot of his recommendations can work for any platform. Thank you Barry, for lunch.
