Hessie Trail 2013

Last year I had a meetup at Hessie Trail in hopes of seeing lots of Columbine. Didn't happen, oh, but Catherine found one, I think. I'm hoping a little later in the season, we will see many. The Hessie Trail is located outside of Nederland, past the little town of Eldora. Parking is a pain, mostly on the side of the road, but getting there early really helps. Car pooling might be a good idea. We went as far as Lost Lake last year, but feel free to take whatever path is calling your name. The trail rating, in my eyes, is moderate to semi-hard. The trail is steep and rocky, but you can always rest by some amazing waterfalls. Please come prepared incase it rains, some good hiking shoes, snacks, water and, of course, your camera. Hope you can make it. Please send me any questions.

The road is down from the small town of Eldora. Umm . . if I remember from last year, once you turn on the road outside of Nederland, its about 3.1 miles. It will look like you are going the wrong way, but keep going. The road will split with one going up the hill, I think its called 4th of July Road and the other goes down into water. There is a big sign between the two. Hope that helps. If not, let me know and I'll try to better explain.

In case anyone doesn't know. They are shutting down I-70 from I-25 to Federal Blvd starting at 7pm until 5am Monday for some bridge work.

Thanks for the warning. We will be coming up 470 to 70 so should miss it.

Be sure you dress in layers. Snow in the mountains today, really? There's flash flooding in Nederland, so be sure to wear some good hiking boots that you don't mind getting muddy. Looking forward to Saturday. It will be an adventure.

Debbie, you make me nervous. Be careful out there in the middle of the night. I'm sure you will be getting some great shots. See you there up on the mountain.

For the early group driving from South West Lakewood, leaving at 3:30 - 3:40am, enough time to get the sunrise ?

I'm up for the early group too. I will not, however, be repeating my Loveland Pass performance and sleeping on-location for an entire hour before the hike haha.

My iPhone app 'Sun Seeker', has the sunrise at 5:49a, and the hike takes at least another hour or so to get to the lake itself. There is a possibility I will start out early for that, but will definitely rendezvous w/ everyone at the lake

Sharon, most of the people that I thought were going early have cancelled. You might want to check with Little Debbie. Sorry, I'm not much more help than that.

      July 15, 2013

    • Alex B.

Sharon, Little Debbie, maybe Germain as well, anyone interested in car pooling up for the early trip? I've been kicking around times to leave denver to get up at the trail head early. Willing to provide coffee and gas money. . .

The Hessie Trail meetup is just over a week away and I just wanted to touch base. I know a few of you are going early to be at Lost Lake before sunrise. PLEASE be careful as the trail is rocky and steep. For the rest of us, let's meet at the trail head, at 6:00 or a little before. If you have questions on how to get there, please let me know. Parking is along the road only. We will be leaving no later than 6:10. See you then.

Enjoy! I'll still be in a different part of Colorado, enjoying the wildflowers!

About leaving up that trail in the dark. Be sure you have good lights. The trail is dangerous in the dark. Lot of loose rock and last year trees covered park of the trail. You had drop off on the sides. So if you are leaving early do be safe and have good lights and don't go alone.
