Summer Challenge - Sunrise and Full Moon Setting, Mount Evans

OK.  This one's a serious challenge.  This is one of the longest daylight days of the year, and we have the opportunity to catch a full moon setting and a sunrise from the top of Mount Evans.  Game?

Meet at the parking lot just before the entrance gate to the Mount Evans Road at 4 a.m.  Yes, you read that correctly.  4 a.m.  That means I have to leave my house just before 3 a.m. to get there in time . . . .  We will leave the gate at 4:05 am to drive the 16 miles to the top.

Pay your entrance - if you have a Parks Pass, you can use it.  Otherwise, pay at the kiosk.

We will move directly to either Summit Lake or the parking lot at the top.  Looking west, we should catch the full moon setting over the western mountains (~ 4:48 a.m.).  We can then turn our attention to civil twilight followed by sunrise at ~ 5:33 a.m.

Depending on the spring snow, Summit Lake may still be frozen.  If so, it's a great candidate for lovely ice abstractions.  Wildflowers will be in the early stages.  The likelihood of deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, marmots, and pica are quite good, including this year's young.

After sunrise, it's a free shoot - I plan on including the full cadre of lenses/filters so i have choices.  And my final choice will be . . . breakfast.  We can rendezvous mid-morning for a hearty breakfast, including some camera chimping to see what we may have captured on our digital sensors.

Dress warmly.  Layers, gloves, hats. Wind always blows and it's cold.

Game on!!!

More info to follow.

6/16 update:

Early sunrise on Mount Evans is approaching.  I scouted last Sunday - spring is just starting to break above treeline.  I'll send more details for Saturday's outing later this week.

Por favor - if you are NOT going to attend, please change your RSVP.  I am concerned about the large group size - it's a lot of cars and people to coordinate for sunrise.  Seriously, this is a way-before-the-crack-of-dawn event, and if you're not committed, please change your RSVP.  No harm, no foul - and I'd encourage you to visit Mount Evans during hours that are more to your liking (late afternoon/evening are wonderful!).

On that note - carpool.  And don't wait until Saturday to figure that out - I won't be patient at the meeting location as we need to get up the mountain for pre-dawn light.

I need to get up there even earlier next time. That moon goes down fast!

Only in a great photo group after missing everything I was hoping to shoot (moon and goats) at 4am no less could I say I still had a great time. Thanks again Catherine.
Good note is after our meet-up I hiked within a mile of Mt. Evans to see what it was like going up. Next time will be to finish another 14ner

No full moon shots here either. I went off trail looking to catch a reflection in a puddle, but it was already too low over a ridge I didn't realize was so high. Blasted a few but dumped them.

I didn't get anything reportable from the moon, either; was hoping for moon against morning-light mountains, but that was a #fail.

Hats off to the car poolers. Doing your best with what you're brought to see. It's a lot of faith. And to the drivers, the pressure and responsibility. Not just for getting up and down that road with a sunrise in your eyes, or up in DARK! And that you are at the right place at the right time. Lose Cannon here, sorry.

And, for those of you getting there before moonset, so that you don't have to pull out your wallet card/cheat sheet, I've looked up (again) the "Looney 11 Rule" for shooting direct pics of the moon, for you (you can purchase the wallet card for $199.99, which includes the SouthWest Denver Photo Team 30% discount):

Looney 11 Rule: For the ISO you're using, set Shutter Speed to <1/ISO> at f/11 for a full moon, clear sky (ie, ISO 200 use 1/200s at f/11). Use 1 Stop slower speed for every 1/8th moon less than full moon.

(Tomorrow's a full moon, so I'm not going to do the calculations for you)

I'm going to be shooting at Summit Lake Friday night from 9:30-11:30; does anyone know if I'd be allowed to just take a nap in my car or will I have to drive down then back up the next morning?

OK. Just spoke with the Clear Creek Ranger. The Summit Lake Parking lot is patrolled by Denver Mountain. He couldn't really speak to what they would do if we were to hang out there. BUT ... as there are people there at all hours of the night, he saw no problem with "hanging" out between our sessions. If you want to park, then either use one of the pull-outs along the road or go on up to the top and park there as it is patrolled by the Clear Creek Ranger. I'll likely head on up to the top since that is one of our possible destinations. If someone in the group can call us to tell us if the main body is stopping at Summit Lake, those of us who are up at the top can head down to that parking area. (303)[masked]

    June 20, 2013

    • Charles P.

If you tell them you are too tired to drive, what are they going to tell you to do; drive down this treacherous road! They have to cut you slack, they just won't come out and say it in advance.

I called the Clear Creek Ranger District and they appear to not be returning messages until after the weekend. I left a message and also sent an email asking the question about "hanging out" in the Summit Lake parking lot between photo sessions. As we will not be "camping", and are only "hanging around", it might be OK ... even if I take a short nap while "hanging about". I'll post back if I get a return call.

Had thoughts of getting a campsite at Echo Lake on Friday so I would already be up there. But then thought that I might not be great company on Saturday after being up half the night and the place too noisy to get in a nap. Sooo, looks like a drive. Note all that Squaw Pass is being repaved on the Evergreen end so if you were thinking about heading up that way there's a detour.

Charles, unless it suddenly changed without notice, the National Parks Pass is valid for entry. They certainly don't publicize it at the gate, hoping that people will pay anyway.

May I also suggest for anyone wanting to keep warm that purchasing some hand warmers or body warmers can help out immensely. A pack usually just costs a couple bucks and can help keep your hands and your body warmer. Look in the outdoor section of your favorite store. REI, Walmart, Gander Mountain, etc. And break them open about 30 to 60 minutes before you really want them to start working. (Just a tip from a person who used to shoot high school football in freezing and windy temperatures.)
