OK. This one's a serious challenge. This is one of the longest daylight days of the year, and we have the opportunity to catch a full moon setting and a sunrise from the top of Mount Evans. Game?
Meet at the parking lot just before the entrance gate to the Mount Evans Road at 4 a.m. Yes, you read that correctly. 4 a.m. That means I have to leave my house just before 3 a.m. to get there in time . . . . We will leave the gate at 4:05 am to drive the 16 miles to the top.
Pay your entrance - if you have a Parks Pass, you can use it. Otherwise, pay at the kiosk.
We will move directly to either Summit Lake or the parking lot at the top. Looking west, we should catch the full moon setting over the western mountains (~ 4:48 a.m.). We can then turn our attention to civil twilight followed by sunrise at ~ 5:33 a.m.
Depending on the spring snow, Summit Lake may still be frozen. If so, it's a great candidate for lovely ice abstractions. Wildflowers will be in the early stages. The likelihood of deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, marmots, and pica are quite good, including this year's young.
After sunrise, it's a free shoot - I plan on including the full cadre of lenses/filters so i have choices. And my final choice will be . . . breakfast. We can rendezvous mid-morning for a hearty breakfast, including some camera chimping to see what we may have captured on our digital sensors.
Dress warmly. Layers, gloves, hats. Wind always blows and it's cold.
More info to follow.
Early sunrise on Mount Evans is approaching. I scouted last Sunday - spring is just starting to break above treeline. I'll send more details for Saturday's outing later this week.
Por favor - if you are NOT going to attend, please change your RSVP. I am concerned about the large group size - it's a lot of cars and people to coordinate for sunrise. Seriously, this is a way-before-the-crack-of-dawn event, and if you're not committed, please change your RSVP. No harm, no foul - and I'd encourage you to visit Mount Evans during hours that are more to your liking (late afternoon/evening are wonderful!).
On that note - carpool. And don't wait until Saturday to figure that out - I won't be patient at the meeting location as we need to get up the mountain for pre-dawn light.
