Guanella Pass Waterfalls & Fall Colors Scouting/Picnic Lunch

Let's head up 285 to Grant, then up to Guanella Pass to take photos of the waterfalls and fall colors along the Platte River. I'll bring my portable grille and we can have a picnic lunch. Our rallye point will be the Tipsy's parking lot off of Bowles and C-470 and we can car pool from there. You'll want to bring a tripod and a neutral density filter or polarizer to get your shutter speeds slow enough to blur the water on the water falls.

Eddie, you are hilarious. The funniest part is I thought they were YOUR condiments....so someone is condiment-less out there. LOL

Even though I wasn't feeling my best, it was great to share one of my favorite photo spots and a great picnic with the group. It was quite cold when we started, but warmed up beautifully into an 80+ degree day.

A wonderful location and a wonderful day. The only reason for 4 stars and not 5 is that I would have liked more information on the location and where to shoot when we got there. Thanks to Byron for the great picnic location at Wilderness on Wheels.

Great meetup, as always. Good falls, good trees, good grub and great company.

Hey Bob, I ended up with your condiments in my ice chest. Your spicy sauce with your secret ingredients is now in my protective custody. You can buy it back on Craigs List. It's listed under "discrete encounters".

it was a perfect day! a great combination of blue sky, waterfalls, golden aspens, the laughter and fun of friendship and the most perfect of spots for a picnic that was devine! I absolutely love getting together with this group of friends- it is what makes life so great- friendship !!!!

Outstanding! Bob you really out did yourself, being sick and all. Your a terrific teacher and of course chef. Thank you so much for the wonderful day, and for having this event on Sunday. I don't think we could of asked for a better day.!!!!!!!

Alright team, my apologies for being somewhat in absentia, but I was out of town until Wednesday night and I"m fighting off a cold, but I'm back in the saddle again......buckaroo Bob. Tomrrow, we will be meeting at Tipsy's at 7am then carpooling up 285 to Grant then turning on the Guanella Pass turn off. As for dogs and teenagers, my feeling is you can bring them if you can control them. I'm not a fan of having doggies trying to lick my face and jump on me when I'm trying to shoot photos.

Just a clarification. Are we meeting at Tipsy parking lot at 7am or trying to meet up at Guanella Pass at 7am?

Can't make Sunday because have to work. Just did a hike today at Kenosha Pass, the colors are barely present. Have fun everyone, and I look forward to checking out the bounty after everyone posts. ;o)

This sounds like fun! I will most likely be able to make it. Does anyone mind if I bring my four legged furry friend, Pepper?

Guess I have been absent for a bit. But I didn't think Buckaroo Bob would forget my name so quickly. So very sad.

I'm not concerned with any traffic going up in the morning, but with traffic coming back in the afternoon. Both 285 and I-70 will probably both be bad. That's a good excuse to stay there until sunset before heading home! ;-)

Jimmy J, yeah we were able to get the "soccer mom" out finally! LOL I think it might have been the offer of free food....not sure though. :-)

    September 20, 2011

  • Bob S.

Jim, given that we will be up there early in the AM, traffic SHOULD be going mostly the opposite direction. We will see.

All, please bring what you want to grille (e.g. burgers, dogs, brats, etc...) I'll be bringing condiments and some extra items to grille but can't bring enough for 15 people. Also, please bring your own beverages too....I have a nice grille and the expertise to run it... :-)

Yes, we will be coming up 285 late Sunday morning early afternoon, close to 2,000 motorcycles strong!

    September 19, 2011

  • Jim B.

Keep in mind that the "Emily's ride" will be going up to Bailey on 285 later that same morning. Depending on when and which route you return, you may hit a lot of traffic on 285. Also, Guanella pass road goes between Georgetown and Grant, not Idaho Springs.

Can I nap in someone's back seat? 7am! You are all sickos. I was on Loveland, Boreas and Hoosier Passes this past Friday and very few aspens in full color. Oh wow! This one brought out the missing person! (TB)

I'm going just to get Bob's Picnic lunch he serves (and take a few waterfall pics) :-))

Oh, we would love to join you, but we have another obligation that day. Have fun in our back yard! Hope to see you soon.

That date may work out well, because Kenosha and Boreas Passes are both probably at least a week away from peak. I also spoke to someone that was at Guanella Pass yesterday and he said that it was also just starting to change. Last year would have been well past peak by the 25th.

Folks, I'm changing this meetup to Sunday AM, I hope that doesn't mess anyone's plans up.....I hope all will still make it. Mark you can carpool with me.
