East-West (Восток-запад )

While not technically a "Soviet" film, East-West is a film produced in the '90s chronicling the return, following WWII, of Russians/Ukrainians who emigrated to the West after the revolution.  It follows a doctor, Alexei (Oleg Menshikov) who brings his French family to Odessa.  They are all shocked to see how bad the conditions are compared to France, and the wife insists on returning right away.  As we all know, leaving the Soviet Union at that time was not merely a matter of "wanting to" and Alexei quickly realized that he would have to climb the ranks of the Soviet hierarchy to make this possible.

Catherine Deneuve also has a small role.

See wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East/West

This is probably my favorite film ever and I am not feeling inspired to do more research on actual Soviet films I haven't seen.  Let's discuss possible other films to watch next at the meeting.

The movie will start at 7, so come at 6:30 only if you feel like chatting a bit before.  I'll have snacks and wine as usual.

Also please make sure to update your RSVP as needed.  Nobody showed up to the last one, although 12 had current "going" RSVPs.  That really dissuades me from organizing these things.

Thanks for coming everyone!! What a great turnout! I was glad to meet all the new people and I think I can find a way to organize another meeting before June :-)

Thanks, Elizabeth, for hosting! I would be happy to help out with snacks at the net movie so that you don't have to do so much cooking.

I can make the walk to your place but if you know someone who is driving back then that will be helpful. Not too much fun to walk alone in the cold at night :)

Just a reminder to change your RSVP if you aren't coming so I don't make too much food :-) And call my cell at[masked] to be let in.

Sanjay--I will be busy with cooking, but it is only a half hour walk from downtown, I make the walk a lot.

I look forward to joining tomorrow. Is anyone driving around from down town? I would appreciate if some one can give a ride.

Elizabeth, last time I believe, the weather was so awful , but this time it shouldn't be the case, so I'm hoping to make it to this meeting!! Sounds like a good movie and I do not think I've seen it before ...
