One of the best we have been on,the trails ,the river ,the weather and of course our intrepid leader JIm. Unfortunately it will be the last hike for us this season as Canada calls and we will be on our way early next week. Thanks to all for helping to make our 3 month stay in Florida most enjoyable.See you all in December.

DIRECTIONS TO ECON RIVER TRAIL BARR STREET TRAILHEAD

From Lone Cabbage Fish Camp at Hwy 520 and St. Johns River, take hwy 520 West all the way to the junction with Hwy 50. Continue west on 50 through Bithlo to Hwy 419. Turn right on 419 through Chuluota across the Econ River. At the traffic light turn right on Lockwood Road. Continue to the end of Lockwood Road and turn right on hwy 426 about 0.75 miles to Barr Street. Park in the Parking area on the right side of the road. The trail is about five miles total along the river to the new bridge and back. The orange blazed trail also continues South back to Lockwood Road, about a two mile one way hike. Scenery is outstanding on both trails. There is a two dollar per person fee to enter the trail.

It seems to be contagious, this week's trail is also a problem, this time it's too wet. I tried the Barr St. to Lockwood St. trail and hit water in a mile or two, then, I tried the Black Hammock Trail, it was wet too. The fallback is the trail to the bridge that we did earlier in the year. It was in great shape so let's do it. It's mostly through forest with much of it along the Econ River. Meet, as scheduled, at Lone Cabbage Fish Camp on hwy. 520 and the St. John's River at 8:30 AM. It's about 35 miles to the trailhead so we will probably get there somewhat after nine. The trail is about 4.5 miles so it's an easy hike. Bring lunch as we get to our spot along the river close enough to noon to have a leisurely lunch. Bring snacks, lunch and something to drink. There is a two dollar per person fee to enter the area so be prepared. The wildflowers are starting to appear and there were a few alligators in the river, there are high vertical banks on the river so they can't get near us.
