Bananas!

Join us for a backcountry ski to the infamous Banana Bowl in Rocky Mountain National Park. The Banana Bowl (north-east face of Flattop Mtn) has a huge wide open low-angle north facing slope for fantastic skiing. It also has an east facing low-angle gladed slope that always serves up thigh deep powder for great skiing. If there is fresh snow or spring corn we ski the wide open Banana bowl, otherwise we shred the deep powder on the gladed slope. There are astonishing views of Glacier Gorge and snowcapped peaks from the top of the bowl. Skiing the Banana Bowl starts from the Bear Lake trailhead, and is about 2.5 miles with 2,000 ft of gain.

Skiers will definitely want skins to go uphill. Snowshoers are welcome to join the fun and laugh at the skiers faceplanting.  Sadly doggies cannot come because of National Park rules.

All the slopes we will ski are less than 25 degrees so avalanche risk is minimal.  If you have an avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel then bring it all, the safer the better. However, since we are skiing low angle slopes, beacons are not required.

Since I have now moved to Denver I am going to have a Denver meeting spot too. :)  Lets meet at 9:00 AM at the Safeway on Federal and West 74th Ave in Westminster. We will arrange carpools from there.

Boulder people meet at 9:45 AM at the Justice Center parking lot on the south-east corner of Canyon and 6th in Boulder.  The Denver carpool will swing by the Justice Center and we will arrange the final carpool from there.

You can call me at[masked] if something comes up.

Lets go ski some sweet powder or spring corn!
Rom

I'd like to join you guys. Can I meet you in Lyons somewhere at 9:00?

I’m going to Hidden Valley on Thursday. I can meet people in Lyons at the Stone Cup at 9:00 am to carpool or meet people at the Hidden Valley warming hut at 10:00 am. For those who are not familiar with Hidden Valley it is an old ski area in RMNP. Elevation gain will be less than 2000ft and its probably an easier climb/ski than the Banana Bowl. For more details, Please visit the link below (Check out the 1990 Tail Map).

We will skin up the Columbine trail and may ski the trees on skiers right (2nd/3rd bowl) depending on conditions. If we don’t go above Trail Ridge road, we will probably do a lap down Columbine and Aspen Trail. Please email or call me if you want to carpool, otherwise I will meet you at the warming hut. I'm glad to hear everyone made it back safely. I'm thinking of giving the Banana Bowl another try on Thursday if anyone wants to join me.

With the avalanche danger being high and probably won’t change over the next couple of days, I may go over to Hidden Valley in RMNP and stay on slopes less than 25 degrees. I will post my plans tomorrow.

Well our ski on Sunday was awesome. It was really windy so we skied the tree run next to the bowl on the east face of Flattop. The Tree Run was great with lots of deep powder through glades and some fun drops. We had something slightly scary happen when someone in our group didn't show up at the cars. He skied below the trail and ended up wandering in the huge flat expanse near Bierstadt Lake. He eventually found the Bear Lake road and was picked up by a ranger while we were up on the mountain looking for him. An interesting day!

Does anyone want to carpool from either Greenbriar restaurant (park across the street) along 36, or Lyons?

are you still going to be at the Library?

      April 13, 2013

    • Warren G.

My wife and I are coming from Loveland so we'll meet you all at the trailhead. Unless someone wants a ride to take advantage of our RMNP pass. We can take 1 more in our car or we can hop in someone else's car to get it into the park...

I'm coming from Fort Collins. Do you still have room for one? I could meet anywhere in Loveland or en route off 34.

Hi , I'll will be meeting you at the Boulder Justice center . Anyone else meeting there ?

    Warren/Peter,

We will of course start from the Bear Lake trailhead. However I was telling Bob that we will take the Fern Lake trail because that accesses the bottom of the Banana Bowl. Lyons People,
If you want the caravan could stop at the Stone Cup coffee shop in Lyons. I don't mind stopping to pick you guys up. We would probably get there around 10:30 am.

Rom, as not to delay the group with another stop in Lyons, I will meet the group at the Bear Lake Trail Head. About what time do you expect to arrive at the trail head?

    April 10, 2013

    • Warren G.

Correction, I will meet you at the Fern Lake Trail Head.

      April 10, 2013

  • Peter M.

Rom, I think you mean Bear Lake. Please confirm.

    April 10, 2013

  • Rom M.

    Bob,

    Fern Lake trail.

    April 10, 2013

  • Robert

In case I miss the group at the parking lot, I might try to catch up on the trail. Is the plan to take Fern Lake Trail, or Flattop Mountain Trail?

    April 10, 2013

  • Robert

Going to try to meet the group in the Bear Lake parking area, or on the trail.

    Steve,

The Banana Bowl is a classic for a reason. It's always good. Our Colorado wind dumps huge amounts of snow in the Bowl and the tree run. I have skied there 15 years and the Bowl and tree run are always buried in snow. It's awesome skiing, don't worry.

I was thinking that snow coverage in Bananas would not be good. Does anyone know?
