Soaring in the Winds-Cirque of the Towers!

Pingora Peak

Join us for a backpacking/climbing trip to the spectacular Cirque of the Towers in the Wind River Range in Wyoming over the Labor Day vacation. The Winds are my favorite mountain range in the American Rockies with gigantic deep blue lakes, towering jagged peaks, monstrous sparkling glaciers, a complete ecosystem with wolves and grizzlies, and are a vast pristine wilderness.

We will drive to the Winds on Thursday night, August 29th after work and car-camp. Friday, we will backpack 8.5 miles in to the heart of the Cirque of the Towers and make a base camp. Saturday and Sunday, people are welcome to enjoy the Cirque in whatever way makes them happy. You can relax and soak in the amazing views, or hike to the many dazzling blue lakes, or climb some unbelievable routes on the huge soaring towers. Monday, we will backpack out and drive home.

For hikers there are many passes, fantastic lakes, and class 3-4 routes on some gorgeous peaks.  For climbers, the options are absolutely ridiculous and honestly overwhelming. :) I am setting my sights on Wolfs Head one day, and either Pingora or Sharks Nose the other day.  Wolfs Head (5.6, 2nd picture) is an absolutely astonishing ridge climb with incredible exposure.  Pingora (1st picture), is simply amazing.  I have done it before but would love to do it again.  Sharks Nose (3rd picture) has always haunted me.  It looks horrifying. Somehow there is a 5.7 route on it, but apparently it is difficult to follow.  I don't know, but a dream of mine is to somehow stand on the top of that peak.  For good climbers there is the incredible north-east face of Pingora, 12 pitches of[masked] that is a 50 classic of North America climb.  Warbonnet (bottom picture) and Warrior I and II are sick towers with some ridiculously hard routes.

Climbers:

You are welcome to lead or follow. If you want to lead you need to be a solid alpine trad climber. If you want to follow, you need to have experience following on trad, and be in great shape.  Post if you want to lead or follow.

We can figure out the climbing teams as the trip gets closer and when we meet and see exactly who is going.

Follower Mandatory Gear List:

- rock climbing shoes

- harness

- belay device

- 2 large locking biners

- 2 normal biners

- rappel/belay glove

- helmet

- prusik slings ( Prusik slings are a 10 foot length and 6 foot length of 6 mm climbing cord. We will show you how to make the slings. Also bring a 3 foot length of 6 mm climbing cord. This can be used as a rappel backup.)

- be ready for any kind of weather

Directions to the Big Sandy Trailhead:

If coming from the south near Rock Springs, Wyoming: Drive north on U.S. 191 to the town of Farson.  At Farson, leave U.S. 191 turning right (east) onto highway 28.  Two miles east of Farson on highway 28, there is a sign to Big Sandy. Turn left (northeast) and drive approximately 40 miles of dirt road to an intersection.  Turn right (east), following the sign to Big Sandy. After 7.5 miles you will find another signed intersection where you turn left (north) to Big Sandy.  Follow this road and signs for approximately 10.5 miles until reaching Big Sandy campground and trailhead (9080 ft).

Friday Morning Meet:

Meet on Friday morning at the Big Sandy trailhead at 9:00 AM.

Feel free to call me at [masked] if something comes up.

Lets go Soar in the Winds!

We did the exact same routes you guys did, but a day before. Nice pictures! We camped above Lonesome Lake in the trees.

Julie do you have my stove?

    September 5, 2013

    • Rom M.

Yes Julie has your stove. We gave it to her since she lives in Boulder.

Hey Sharon! Sorry I just unpacked all my stuff today and realized I still had it. I can get it to you this week.

Well we had a great time in the Cirque of the Towers in the Winds. We had two perfect days of weather for hiking and climbing. The hikers went on some long explorations of the surrounding valleys and saw lots of gorgeous lakes. The climbers climbed Pingora and Wolfs Head, which are the awesome classic moderate routes in the Cirque. We had a lot of rain on the hike out to keep things cool. A great trip with lots of fun people and funny conversation.

Great trip, beautful area, fun people. If anyone finds my missing C4 #3 and white long runner with blue edges and two nonlock biners let me know. I've lost too much recently. Julie, great meeting you and I wishing you well finding more outdoor friends in Utah. Dave, thanks for getting the keys back. And Greg, thanks for everything, and for not calling the cops on us for latemess. We will go on more trips. I'm resting today.

Hi Rom...my husband and I are interested in joining the group for this but we wouldn't be able to leave until Friday morning. Do you have any idea how long it will take to get to the TH?

    August 3, 2013

    • Jane

Sounds great! We may be able to leave late on Thursday and get part way there. There is a possibility we'll meet you all at the TH on Friday morning (but don't wait on us).

      August 28, 2013

    • Jane

Hey...we are not going to be able to make it after all. I ended up having to get some dental work done yesterday and it was more involved than I thought it was going to be. Have fun!

      August 30, 2013

  • Chad

I've led up to 5.6, would prefer to swap leads, we'll see. I can bring 60 meter rope, set of nuts, cams and 10 runners. I'll bring one-man tent in case, but prefer tenting with someone, don't snore. Have water filter. Anyone want to carpool from Denver? I live by Denver U. Can drive with three okay and 4 crammed, or can ride. [masked]

Hi David, I will come to 4940 Pearl East Circle (roughly 49th and Pearl) at 4:15 and check in with you at your office. I live in Erie so it's better to leave my car there. See you soon. Thanks! Greg

      August 29, 2013

    • David B.

Greg / Chad / Sharon, all sounds fine to meet at 4940 Pearl East Circle (office park) at ~5. Greg and Sharon, it sounds like Chad will get here around 5, so no need for you to get here earlier unless you want. (I'll probably keep working up to about 5.)

      August 29, 2013

  • Rom M.

Okay I just posted directions to the Big Sandy trailhead in the trip description.

Julie, when/where would you like to meet on Thursday to carpool to the Winds?

People are welcome to caravan with us on the drive to the Winds and have dinner together, or just meet us at the Big Sandy trailhead Friday morning at 9:00 AM.

    I'm a hiker but I don't have a map either.

    August 28, 2013

  • Jessica

Hiker question.....besides David, do any of the other hikers have maps of the area? I had no luck at REI in getting one.

    August 28, 2013

  • shawn

I am sorry but my schedule was changed last minute by one of my classes and I am not able to make this trip anymore. Really bummed too been meaning to get out there for years.

    August 28, 2013

  • shawn

I can bring a 70m 9.2 I also have almost a full rack (would be nice if I could borrow a few mid range pieces from someone 1-3 range). I will be leaving about 3 if anyone wants to jump in my car I can take 3 people in addition to myself. (4 if you don't mind putting stuff on the roof).

    August 27, 2013

    • Rom M.

Same for you Shawn. Bring your rope and pro and then we will figure out what to bring at the trailhead. We might be able to get away with two rope teams. So we could consolidate all of the pro into two good racks. Anyways, lets see how many climbers we have at the trailhead.

      August 28, 2013

    • Rom M.

Its about a 7-8 hour drive to the Big Sandy trailhead, plus we are not meeting until 9:00 am on Friday morning. So I think you could leave around 5 pm and still get lots of your beauty sleep Shawn. :) Then probably more people could ride with you.

      August 28, 2013

  • Rom M.

Anita and I are looking for a ride. Another possibility is to take a rental car. If two or three other people would like, we could all take a rental car. I just looked and the cost for an intermediate sized rental car for the trip would be $160 total, or $40/person with 4 people.

    August 26, 2013

    • Julie W.

Still have one spot left! It's yours.

      August 27, 2013

    • Rom M.

Julie, thanks for the rides for Anita and I. We definitely would enjoy riding with you.

      August 28, 2013

  • Jessica

I have a stove I am happy to share.

    August 27, 2013

  • Kira

I have 2 questions: 1. Is anyone planning to just hike and not climb?
    2. Could anyone pick me up at my office at 5:30 or a little earlier? It's at the 28th and Arapahoe intersection... (I'm trying to accommodate a client who can only come in Thursday late afternoon:-()

    Hi,

I have a car, a stove, a filter. I can take one person comfortably (mini cooper). Or I'm happy to car pool with others.

    August 27, 2013

  • Rom M.

Well it's time to start getting this trip organized.

    Carpooling:
If you can drive then post to the group. If you need a ride then post that too. Carpools can leave whenever they want and meet us at the trailhead on Friday morning.

    Backpack Gear:
If you would like to share a tent, stove, or water filter then post to the group. If you need a tent space, or need to share a stove or water filter then post. Sharing and coordinating gear will help keep our backpack weight down. I will bring a Jetboil stove to share. My water filter is broken so we need to share a filter or bring iodine.

    Rope Teams:
    Leaders: Rom, Shawn
Followers: Anita, Julie, Chad, Jane?, William?, Kendall?
I will bring my rope and pro. Shawn, you bring your rope and pro too. We can put multiple people on each rope team by using trail ropes or by using double ropes.

Hikers: Kira, Julie Z, Jessica, David, Greg

    August 26, 2013

    • Julie W.

I have a water filter I can bring and share and I would like to use the stove. I have a 60m rope and pro as well, should I bring both?

      August 26, 2013

  • Rom M.

    Trailhead Directions:
I will post directions to the Big Sandy trailhead in the Winds on Tues or Wed. There is lots of camping at the Big Sandy trailhead, so just get there Thursday night and camp.

    Friday Meet:
We will all meet at the Big Sandy trailhead on Friday morning at 9:00 AM.

Hey, I am highly interested in this trip (as another hiker). Is there anyone I catch a ride with from Boulder?

Just need to confirm I can get the time off from work (Friday)....

I'm tentatively interested. I'd like to follow. I've got gear and a rope.
