Icebergs Ahead!

The snow continues to fall in the high peaks this week and will make for some great skiing this weekend.  What a fantastic winter this has been!  Join us for a backcountry ski to Iceberg lakes in our spectacular Indian Peaks.  We will start from the Moffat Tunnel trailhead (near Rollinsville) and ski about 1.5 miles up the trail. We will then leave the trail and break trail up through the trees for about 2/3 of a mile to near Clayton lake at the edge of treeline. From there we will behold the huge Iceberg lakes cirque. We will then skin up through the glades of the cirque for about 2/3 of a mile to near Iceberg lakes.  These lakes are absolutely gorgeous nestled below the huge walls of the Continental Divide. We will then ski down through the glorious powder of the cirque, and then a long deep powder run through the trees to the trail, and then fly back to our cars.  The total elevation gain will be about 2,500 ft.

Skiers definitely bring skins to go uphill. Snowshoers are welcome to join the fun and laugh at the skiers faceplanting. Doggies are welcome too.

We will always try to ski low angle slopes (less than 25-30 degrees) or in the trees in order to minimize avalanche risk.  It is highly recommended to bring an avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel to improve group safety.  If you do not have this gear then you can still come since we will try to avoid avalanche terrain, but please be careful.

Denver people meet at 8:30 AM on Sunday, March 2nd at the Safeway on Federal and West 74th in Westminster.  We will arrange a carpool from there.

Boulder people meet at 9:05 AM at the Justice Center parking lot on the south-east corner of Canyon and 6th in Boulder The Denver carpool will come to the Justice Center and we will arrange the final carpool there.  The Denver carpool will probably arrive around 9:05-9:10 AM.

You can call me at[masked] if something comes up.

Lets go ski some sweet backcountry powder!

Well our ski of the Iceberg drainage was great. We skinned up to treeline and contemplated going all the way to the lakes because the powder was so good. We decided to ski down and then enjoyed 15 inches of fresh powder on a nice solid base. We skied through glades, around small cliffs, and then a long run through deep powder in the trees to the trail. It was warm with hardly any wind. What a fantastic day with some fun people!
