Pillowcase Dresses for Haiti

Please join us for a charity sewing event to make pillowcase dresses for orphanages in Haiti!

Local sewing instructor Lynne Nixon of Sew Right for You instructs all levels of sewers during this workshop as we work toward our goal of completing 50 dresses!

We will work in teams to construct dresses, and even if you do not sew, you are welcome to attend! We will need folks to cut fabric, iron, and assist sewers. Feel free to come at any time during this event, and stay as long as you like!

Please bring any of the following supplies to contribute to this event:

new or gently used pillowcases, or rectangles of cotton/cotton blend fabric, double fold bias tape (1 package is needed per dress), 1/4" wide elastic, thread, and lace or ribbon trim.

*Please wash pillowcases and fabric before coming to this event.

*Rectangles should be cut into the following sizes:

Small: 26"L x 42" wide
Med: 32"L x 42" wide
Large: 37"L x 42" wide
XL: 40-45"L x 42" wide

Local thrift stores have excellent deals on used pillowcases-- you can pick them up for less than a dollar, or ask your friends and family if they have any linens or fabric to spare!

Feel free to bring your own sewing machine, and we will also have several to use here.

We look forward to seeing you here to sew for a good cause!

Please email Lynne Nixon ([masked]) with any questions.

From Lynne Nixon, event coordinator:

The Hambricks have The House of Hope Ministry Center in Haiti. They help local missionaries, work with 3 orphanages and coordinate visiting mission team projects. The dresses will be sent with a mission team from the USA who will be traveling to Haiti this summer. I forgot to thank Becca! Without her help, this event would not have been possible.

I am looking forward to our charity sewing event tomorrow. If everyone could bring scissors and pins, that would be great. Also we need 1 more iroing board. If you are bringing your sewing machines, be sure to bring white, tan and black thread. When you come in, see Becca for your job assignments. Hi, Catherine! No need to bring a machine-- looks like we will have plenty from RSVPs so far. Lynne will also bring several machines, and the Greenhouse has three to use.
