Beginning Quiltmaking: Flying Geese Pillows

Learn to quilt and make a cute pillow for your couch or bed! Please join us in the Greenhouse as quilter Caitlin Topham instructs this 3-hour workshop to make a quilted pillow cover featuring the traditional flying geese pattern with a modern twist. In class, we'll go over how to piece the pillow front, ways to quilt it, and how to create an envelope-style pillow back. Students can expect to leave this class with a finished pillow cover!

Please note that while this class is designed for beginners, basic sewing skills and a familiarity with a sewing machine are required. To help you finish your pillow during class time, please come with all of your pieces pre-cut.

Please find the complete supply list for this class here.

To better manage attendance to this instructor-led class, there will be a $5 deposit required to RSVP to this class. This deposit will be refunded to all present attendees as a $5 Spoondollar credit to be applied to any Spoonflower purchase of fabric, wallpaper or decals. This refund will appear on Friday, May 10 for all present attendees. If you RSVP yes and cannot make the class, please change your RSVP status to "No" by Monday, May 6 at 6pm for a full refund. If you do not change your RSVP by this time and do not attend class, your deposit will not be refunded. Any deposits that are not refunded will be put toward future events and workshops in the Greenhouse.

Feel free to email with any questions about this class, and we hope to see you here!

I just realized I don't have an even feed foot. So I'm not coming unless I hear I don't need it.

Hi there. The even feed foot is not necessary, it just helps to sew multiple layers.

Oh no I wish I would have just come anyway. I had everything else ready but couldn't find that foot in any store.

Would it be OK for me to arrive at 5:15pm in order to cut my fabric? I may need some help in the cutting :)

    • Spoonflower E.

Hi, Eileen! Thanks for checking on this. The Greenhouse will not be ready for folks to arrive until about 5:45pm tomorrow. Luckily, the shapes for this one are only squares and rectangles, so you can cut strips first, and then cut them down into smaller pieces. But you're a pro-- I'm sure you'll be able to finish! :) Looking forward to seeing you here tomorrow night!

do I need to cut my rectangles and squares before class?

    May 6, 2013

    • Spoonflower E.

Hi, Lynne! Yes, please come with your pieces cut before class to save time. Can't wait to see you Thursday! I think this project is going to be a lot of fun!

Can I be put on a waiting list?

    April 30, 2013

    • Spoonflower E.

Hi, Lizabeth! A spot is opened each time someone drops the class, but it looks like they've already been filled. Since we are taking a deposit now, there is not a waiting list for this class. The final day for folks to drop with a refund is Monday, though, so I do hope you'll check the status and see if a spot opens! Thanks so much for checking!

  • Lizabeth

Or was a spot opened from Lenore Ramm or Beth Davis?

  • Beth D.

I'm sorry I won't be able to attend! Next time!

Hi Caitlin, I am still not really used to think in inches... Could you tell me how much fabric is needed for the background? Do you use the same print for the backing of the pillow? Thanks.

Hi, Virginie! You can use any print you like for the pillow backing; I used something that coordinated with my fabrics on the front. You won't need much fabric for the background. I think a 1/4 yard should be plenty, though you could always convert everything from inches to centimeters to double check. Looking forward to seeing you in class! -Caitlin

Oops, that didn't take long. Discovered there's a meeting I need to attend. I hope this is held again! :)

No problem! Thanks so much for letting us know, and we will certainly be offering this class again!
