Fabric Design with Photoshop

Explore the basics of fabric design through Photoshop and open a world of possibilities! Please join us as graphic designer Laurie Shipley instructs a 3-hour Photoshop workshop to create a seamless repeat pattern design to print on fabric. Learn types of repeat patterns specific to fabric design as Laurie provides an overview of Spoonflower base fabrics and their end use. Each participant will walk away from class with a print ready seamless design file, a detailed seamless repeat pattern design tutorial, as well as the knowledge to create their own fabric patterns at home!

I mentioned this to Laurie the instructor, but I have been wanting to take a class like this for a long time! My degree is in fabric design, but it was before digital technology was utilized very much in textiles (screenprinting, masking tape, resist techniques, etc.). This class has helped me refresh my computer skills--the last time I learned photoshop was in the late 90's. Now I am motivated to focus on making designs for Spoonflower fabric!

I loved the class. In a short amount of time I learned enough to unlock a new path of creativity. The environment was nice and the class leader was flexible and attentive to the different skill levels of the attendees. I was definitely inspired to learn more and look forward to creating many fabric designs!

Hi, this may be a really ridiculous question, but I was wondering if you could explain a little more about the picture we are supposed to scan. Is this a drawing on paper or do we create a design on the computer? Thanks!

    May 12, 2013

    • AS

Hi again! One more question. I know that if it is scanned in it needs to be 300 dpi, but I am going to draw it digitally using GIMP or Photoshop. Do I need to set the resolution to a particular number? I know a little, but not a lot. Thanks so much! Looking forward to the class tomorrow!

      May 17, 2013

    • Spoonflower E.

The resolution is 300 dpi and the image needs to be 5 inches x 5 inches. You'll need to set your resolution to 300 dpi. Hope that helps! Can't wait to see you tomorrow!

I want to sign up for the spot that is left, but I keep getting this message "Because this Meetup has filled up before your RSVP was submitted, you cannot RSVP" Is it because the deadline for a full refund in case of dropping the class has passed?

    May 16, 2013

    • Spoonflower E.

Hi, Iris! So sorry for any confusion with the site yesterday! Lynn may have beat you to the spot, but since it seems she had some trouble as well, there may have been a problem on the web. Registration for the class should stay open until the day of class, but if you miss this one, don't worry! We'll offer this again soon!

Finally worked. Paypal messed up on me. Finally got it to go through on my hubby's account

Great, Lynn! So glad it worked. I am not sure what error there was with Meetup yesterday-- registration should be open until the day of class. Sorry for any confusion!

There is a spot open... I am trying to sign up and I keep getting an error message

  • Laurie S.

Hi everyone, just to clarify the line art I want you to bring in... This can originate from a hand or digital drawn line, but what you bring into class needs to be saved on your computer ready to go. The drawing specs are here: 5" x 5" line art drawing in digital form saved to your computer. Scanned at 300 DPI; Saved in psd, tiff or jpeg format. I will have one in class for anyone who needs a line drawing. I am looking forward to this fun class!

Is it possible to use Photoshop Elements to accomplish what you'll be doing in this workshop?

    April 30, 2013

    • Laurie S.

Hi Lisa, this course is the basics so I think there is a high possibility Photoshop Elements would suffice, but I have never used that version of Photoshop. You can still get the free trial for the class to be sure if that's an option for you.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
