Basic Hand Embroidery

Join us in the Greenhouse as Caitlin Topham of Salty Oat teaches the basics of hand embroidery! Learn basic embroidery stitches and practice your new skills on this Spoonflower-printed design, provided in class. You'll leave class with this precious sampler perfect for hanging on your wall or incorporating into another project! No previous embroidery experience necessary.

Please see the complete supply list for this class here.

To better manage attendance to this instructor-led class, there will be a $5 deposit required to RSVP to this class. This deposit will be refunded to all present attendees as a $5 Spoondollar credit to be applied to any Spoonflower purchase of fabric, wallpaper, decals or gift wrap. This refund will appear in Spoonflower accounts on Wednesday, September 11 for all present attendees. You'll need a Spoonflower account to receive your Spoondollar credit. You can sign up for an account here (it's free!), and be sure to include the email address associated with your Spoonflower account when you RSVP.

If you RSVP yes and cannot make the class, please change your RSVP status to "No" by Friday, September 6 at 6pm for a full refund to your PayPal account. If you do not change your RSVP by this time and do not attend class, your deposit will not be refunded. Any deposits that are not refunded will be put toward future events and workshops in the Greenhouse.

Feel free to email with any questions about this class, and we hope to see you here!

This was a great event. I didn't have much experience with embroidery. The project and instruction were at the perfect level. Thanks, Caitlin, for helping me conquer a fear of French knots!

Thank you so much for coming, Renee! I'm so glad that you enjoyed the class. I hope there are lots of French knots in your future!

That was a great class, thanks so much for teaching it. I would be interested in taking another class to learn even more stitches. I really liked the stitch template you taught to a previous class, it would be nice to do one of each letter in class and practice the rest at home. I hope there are more hand embroidery classes in the future.

Thank you all so much for coming out to our class last night! I had a blast meeting new faces and catching up. Please do post pictures of your finished samplers-- We'd love to see them! And check out our short Vine video here: https://vine.co/v/h1dvDxQWu0m. Thanks, again, for coming out and spending your Tuesday night with us!

It was an awesome class - thanks so much, Caitlin! Quick question: I have a trip coming up Friday and I was looking for a sampler I could buy to practice on the plane...any recommendations for a local place to get something fun and not too old-fashioned?

Hi, Tiffany! Thanks for coming last night! I'm not sure of a lot of local places that carry embroidery transfers. You could always purchase a PDF from Sublime Stitching (they're currently having a pattern sale), and print it out and transfer it onto a piece of fabric. Or, you could check out your local bookstore and see if they carry any embroidery books that come with iron-on transfers in them. For embroidery supplies, Elegant Stitches in Cary may be a good place to check out. Good luck!

Shopping for class supplies.. any recommendation on embroidery needle sizes? I noticed a few options when I went to Michaels and it's hard to tell what I need as a beginner! I think I saw Size 1-5, 3-7, , and 5-10..

Hi, Amanda! Feel free to use whatever needle size you prefer. My only suggestion is to make sure the needle eye is large enough to accommodate up to 6 strands of embroidery floss. See you tonight!

Wish I could join you but have a class that night (for work--not fun). Have fun.

I don't need another hobby but this looked fun. Hopefully you'll offer something similar again soon as I didn't get in quick enough.

Hi, Caitlyn. I know the class is full, but can you please accommodate one more?! I have been looking forever it seems like for a class in the Triangle area that teaches hand embroidery.

Hi, Sue. Thank you so much for your interest in my class. Unfortunately, there's not enough space to accommodate any more students. Hopefully we'll be able to offer the class again soon!

will there be enough of the $1 hoops for class participants to each purchase one, or should i purchase and bring one with me just in case?

Hi, Tiffany! I only have 4 extra hoops, but I'll set aside one for you if you wind up registering for the class. Thanks!
