Philadelphia, this spring for the first time EVER we bring to you Bhangra At The Bell in the city of Brotherly Bhangra on March 2nd, 2013. This event will be held in the Irvine Auditorium located on the campus of University of Pennsylvania.
Bhangra is a lively and energetic folk dance that is usually performed while celebrating the annual harvest, however Bhangra has quickly evolved into being done at all sorts of diverse occasions such as birthdays, weddings, and various different celebrations. Bhangra is a very high energy, fast tempo dance style, which helps increase its appeal to individuals of all ages. Furthermore, its attractiveness is the fact that Bhangra is performed in highly flamboyant, and traditional Punjabi attire. At the collegiate level there are over 100 Bhangra teams across the country and about 30 Bhangra Competitions. These competitions are held in major cities all over the United States and usually last 2-3 days. Bhangra has quickly changed the South Asian culture and community in a positive way and has been widely accepted as a part of the American pop culture while emerging as one of the most loved forms of dance in the nation.
Bhangra At The Bell hopes to provide a platform for the top Bhangra teams around the nation to come and showcase their talent in a vibrant exhibition of energy and excitement that Bhangra represents. It is a prestigious opportunity for premier Bhangra teams to display their unique talent and compete for over $3,000 in prize money. This being the first year that we host this competition we really look forward to establishing an event that brings together the South Asian community in the city of Philadelphia. This event would not have been made possible without the various sponsors throughout the Tri-State area. People from all diverse backgrounds will be able to come together for one night under one roof and enjoy the traditional dance form of Bhangra.
