Introduction

Atheism is just the salient point of my approach to studying reality and perception. I'm interested in how people believe and behave.

How did you become a skeptic?

I always liked science and it seemed to explain away everything. I'm also a fan of P.T. Barnum. I think I became a skeptic because I had an older sister that loved to lie to me all the time when I was little.

Did you formerly believe some paranormal or pseudoscience claims?

I once read half of Dianetics until it got weird. My cousin had some tarot cards, and once I even owned a ouija board.

Do you read Skeptical Inquirer, Skeptic, or a similar magazine?

Not a regular subscriber. I have read, and may still have some journal articles on psychology and sociology that explore such things as Subjective Reality, Perception, Self-fulfilling prophecies, etc. These may provide some explanations.

What AtheistInsurgency is saying about this Meetup Group

The topic of skepticism deals not only with certain topics, but the way we think about those topics. One might consider L. Ron Hubbard's methods of persuasion while writing the book Dianetics; gradually evolving discussions of real psychology into a bizarre belief system called Scientology. This method is being used as a model for persuading people to believe in Intelligent Design and Electric Universe Theory which ultimately opens an doorway for creationist rationalization. P.T. Barnum would be beaming with pride and tipping his hat to Hubbard.
