Unity3D Work Night

Calling all Unity3D developers! Having issues getting that 3d model hooked up with Mecanim events - or can't figure out how to create a bitmask for your colliders?

Maybe you just need to block out some time to work on your game, but don't have a good excuse? Come equipped with your computer and Unity3D project to get some work done. Ask your Unity3D allies for advice or feedback. You might even find someone to collaborate with you! This is an informal event, so there won't be any presentations or planned discussions.

For anyone interested in VR applications in Unity, this would be a good event to attend as some people are working on projects locally that involve the Oculus Rift, LEAP motion, Hydra, and even some homebrew devices.

Note: For anyone who doesn't know, parking at this location is free provided you leave the building garage after 7:00PM.

Do we have any planned dates for the next one? Just curious.

Made good progress on my project. Thank you to everyone who helped with my weird bug. It was good both for listening and learning as I worked.

Going to be a little late picking up a hard drive from Microcenter first. See you all there.

    May 20, 2014

  • Randy

So... Turns out my hard drive has corrupted sectors in the boot section of it. ... so... there is a chance I won't be able to do anything. I will still be going, and if I can, I may be able to bring my old laptop (my brother's laptop now) if I can't get my current one working, still sucks. T_T I may suck it up and just buy a new hdd or an ssd, but I really don't have the extra cash for this stuff. T_T

Well, it's more of a I don't want to spend the money then anything. Did confirm the hdd is pretty screwed though. Oddly enough the recovery part works fine, just won't boot. Can even see the files from the command prompt.

Should also mention, I did grab my glove and the rift, but I don't know if I'll get my system up and running while there.

Tonight's the night! I hope you guys are pumped for the occasion, I'm personally pretty excited. I'm going to be trying my hand at incorporating the new LEAP motion skeletal framework into a Unity project of mine. We'll see how it goes!

Just a quick reminder we will have some food tonight but I don't know how long it will last so if you plan on rocking up around 8 or later you might want to eat first. ;)

I'm looking for help on a project in Unity, but can't make it there UNTIL 9. Is anyone going to be there late, or is there someone I can direct my question to?

    May 18, 2014

    • Daniel E.

Hi Scott, I don't know how many people will be here past 9 but I'm not kicking everyone out at 9PM on the dot or anything. Personally I'll be here a little later but I can't speak for anyone else.

Will there be a talk? Or is everyone just going to work on their projects? Ie study hall

    May 19, 2014

    • Randy

To my knowledge, it will effectively be a study hall/showcase. I personally will be willing to answer any questions I can to the best of my ability, though it seems my laptops is still out of commission, I should be able to help where needed.

Hi Marque, we don't have a scheduled talk for this but I will lead a group conversation tonight to see what everyone wants to get out of the group and throw some ideas up for things we could do during these like small talks, showcases, etc. So bring your ideas!

i am a real Maya man. i have never used Unity or render man. i would love to learn how it all works

I don't really have much Unity experience. Really, I am more drawn to the Gameplay Engine and UE4 at the moment.

    May 15, 2014

    • Randy

Personally, I don't mind if you show up and use unity, I think the "unity" part is mainly cause most people in the area either already use unity or want to use unity and need a little help getting started. I'd say consider it more of just a "work on your game with others night" then specifically unity, though just expect unity to be the main focus if there is any talk or explanation.

I'm all for this being a recurring event, sounds really fun! (oh, and productive) :D

    May 11, 2014

  • Randy

I am most definitely going to be bringing my vr glove to work on to this. :D Hopefully I can get it integrated enough into a demo scene to show it off more then just a video. :D

New skeletal API just came out yesterday and it's actually pretty slick! v2 makes me think the LEAP might have some legs yet, still not perfect though, so we'll see!

Apparently a lot of people are liking the "rift mounted" version. (Effectively gluing it to the front of the rift) cause it tracks your hands with the head movement. Interesting ideas, but no matter how good they program it, it will still always have the issue of line of sight.

A little bird tells me that we might have some food and drinks for the work night, so feel free to skip dinner and rock up at 6:00PM!

    May 6, 2014

  • Daniel E.

I'm going to go ahead and schedule this for Tuesday May 20th since that seems to get the popular vote! The idea is to make this a recurring event of some kind, but probably not too often to start. If the one in May goes well then plan on seeing one in June!

Great. Let's get this party started!

      April 17, 2014

    • Zeekar

      See you then

      April 18, 2014

  • Jenny B.

I'd like to participate but won't be available until mid May. I'm more likely to available later in the evenings than earlier. I'd be more likely to participate if it was a regularly (weekly? every other week?) event that I could plan for and commit to an ongoing project.

    April 17, 2014

    • Zeekar

I agree with this. It would be nice if this kind of thing could be recurring.

      April 18, 2014

  • Brett S.

Tuesday's much better for me. This sounds like fun!

    April 17, 2014

  • Randy

I guess I could go.... I'm not that good at unity though (:P j/k of course)

    April 17, 2014

  • Zeekar

As long as it's sometime after 5 PM, any Tuesday or Wednesday is fine with me.

    April 17, 2014

  • Daniel E.

Hey guys, Scott had this great idea and I'd love to see it get rolling! Let us know what Tuesday or Wednesday works for you, I was thinking sometime in late April or May. I like playing in Unity but I think this would be a great chance to meet other Unity developers and maybe start a local circle of practice!
