Lost and found: We ended up with a bit more in the way of mobile devices and equipment than what we started with, heh. Did anyone lose anything? If so, please let me know.

When I opened up my fresh-from-the-mailbox copy of MAKE Magazine today, I was delighted to see an article by one of the creators of the Sifteo about his invention, and an interesting piece on programming for kids and software for Makers. The Global Game Jam was the first time I'd actually gotten to see the Sifteo in action. I wonder how hard it would be to get MAKE Magazine to be a sponsor for the GGJ?

Fantastic! The event was super organized, and FREE (bonus points + accolades to all the sponsors, volunteers, and coordinators!) The energy in the room was contagious and the people were open to collaborations. This was my first event with this group, and I will definitely be back for more! Thank you :D

109 people signed up so far! We'll be opening registration a little early at SSB 222 to make sure there's time for everyone to sign-in. Then after the icebreaker, everyone needs to be in the auditorium, SSB 118, around 4:30 pm. We'll do some general announcements, then show a 15-minute keynote video. This is the video that everyone in all 300+ jam sites around the world will be watching at the beginning of their own jams. Some quick sponsor announcements (remember, they're helping us keep this event free!), some welcomes and comments from game designers around the world, credits, and then the part that everyone's eager to hear about, the GGJ2013 theme! Note that even though we'll be hearing it at our jam, other sites to the West won't have started their jams yet, so please keep the theme secret when you hear it! No tweets or FB updates until after all sites have started, which means we have to wait for Hawaii!

Please follow the instructions at the FAQ at http://stlgamejam.com. If you're not seeing a REGISTER link at the UMSL page, then check for something like a list of "jammers", and see if your name's already there.

I want to confirm I am registered on globalgamejam.org, but for some reason when I visit the site that answer is not obvious to me. I just tried to register today, was there a cut off time?

The Global Game Jam has begun! (At least in New Zealand). Now as 5 pm reaches timezone after timezone, heading West, more and more sites in 63 countries around the world will join the effort. I'm so excited, I can't wait until it's our timezone's turn to join the party!

There's a promotion where Github is offering a free repository to each jam site if we want it. Is there anyone that might want to use Github at the jam? If so, we'll get this going.

    January 24, 2013

    • Kevin G.

I would assume a number (if not all) teams will need some type of source control or other means of sharing assets. A 3 month private repo would be a great option...

      January 24, 2013

    • Elonka D.

Okay, created! We have about 20 private repositories now, good until April 2013. Username is "STLGameJam", I'll make the password available to anyone who asks. :)

I noticed the jam starts at 4pm. Are the events expected to kick off right then? I imagine it will be difficult for some with the traditional 9-5 jobs to make it at 4...

    January 24, 2013

    • Elonka D.

Heh, a bit too late to change things now! But yes, the times are locked because we have to stay in sync with all the other sites around the world. All of the 300+ sites are starting at 5 pm local on Friday, and games have to be finished and being uploaded by 3 pm local on Sunday. The keynote/theme will be announced at 5 pm. We're asking everyone to show up at 4 so we can get 100+ people registered, folks have a chance to connect their laptops and make sure they have wi-fi access, and we're also going to have a quick icebreaker game with a special prize. If you can't be there in time, please show up when you can, though you may miss the announcements, brainstorming and team-forming. We'll fit you in as we can though!

Hello. I was checking out all of the amazing promotions and am especially interested in taking advantage of Mixamo. The description says to talk to the site organizer to get started.

Is this something I need to get set-up before tomorrow or do I just wait till I am at the GGJ?

    January 24, 2013

    • Elonka D.

Here's more information on Mixamo... The promotion allows one code per team. Terry, I'm sending you the code in a separate email. If anyone else wants a code, let me know! http://www.mixamo.com...

AWESOME! I got the email. Thx so much Elonka. I'm getting really excited. Having access to will save a ton of time at the Jam. Too cool :)

Out of curiosity: does anybody have an engine in mind? I'm shooting for Unity this year.

    January 23, 2013

    • Randy

I will be using Unity, and assuming my brother doesn't come down with something (he's not feeling so good tonight) he'll probably use Unity or XNA.

Nerves of steel are a must, Caffeine and massive amounts of it, a pillow to sleep or sit on, a computer for sure (and/or tablets if you're a artist). Those are my suggestions. :-)

What is the cost of attending Game Jam?

    January 22, 2013

    • Randy

The UMSL St. Louis one is 100% free. There are a few sponsors that are helping with costs, and are even providing food for most/all of the meals.

      January 22, 2013

    • Nori T.

Sounds great. Just need to make sure my wife can handle our infant alone for a couple days then I will sign up.

      January 23, 2013

Although I won't be attending the GGJ there in St. Louis, I will be in attendance up here in Denver. I wish all you great creators back home the very best GGJ 2013!!!
