Gothic Architecture at Concordia Seminary

Concordia Seminary in Clayton is a fantastic place to view, appreciate, and photographic some classic Gothic style architecture. It is a campus style environment so there is plenty to see and photograph.

I am setting the meetup time for Saturday morning the 13th at 7 AM so we can get some decent light and beat the heat. According to the forecast there is no rain in the schedule with a high of about 90 for the day. Let's hope for some clouds early in the morning. Let's meet in the parking lot by the main tower. You can't miss the massive tower and there is a huge iron bell in the courtyard there where we will assemble.

I will be using 4x5 large format gear for this outing doing long exposure techniques to try and present an ethereal and peaceful feeling.  I will be using FP4+ and Acros and will hand develop in Pyrocat HD for maximum tonal scale.  The reason I use film in a case like this is because of the extended tonal scale range that I cannot get with my digital equipment.  In addition, by using large format I don't have to worry about geometrical distortion issues.

I would bring your widest lens as well as a telephoto to capture the endless amount of detail available.

This will be a fun outing and I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

To help offset the cost of using the meetup service, if you would donate a buck or two that would be helpful, but not required.

I may be a little bit late but will try to find everyone. I may also bring a view camera. Will we be shooting Exterior and Interior?? Thanks for organizing this!

Thank Jeanie. It arrives tomorrow, so we will see! Then to learn to develop b&w film! :)

Sorry I missed the meet up. But if any of you are still interested in learning 35mm B&W email me at [masked]. I'll be teaching some workshops at the St. Louis Artists Guild this Fall. But if anyone wants to give it a go sooner I can schedule an evening there. It has some interesting architectural stuff as well.

Now as a learning experience Tim, you need to tell us we the rest of us fell short so we can improve.

    July 21, 2013

    • Tim Layton S.

Well, since I didn't judge the images, that would be hard to do, however I will continue to share how I approach professional projects and I am always willing to share all of my details. I think you will get what you are looking for as we continue to go out and do more. The best advice I can tell anyone is pay very close attention to your client (or fake client in our case) and give them exactly what they ask for. This seems so basic, but so many people tend to overlook and fall short. The other thing that comes to mind is making lemonade out of lemons. For example, a client may only give you a window of time and it is completely the wrong light. Gotta make it work somehow. On the reverse of that, nothing beats good planning and advising your client about optimum lighting conditions. At the end of the day, it is more about business and very little about photography (assuming the images are at an acceptable level). Hope this helps!

And the jury has spoken.... Based on the criteria that I outlined for the photos, my blind jury came back with a tie between Bob Rickert and Matt Kovatovich. Congrats gents and I have to say there were many good images from everyone. Stay out of the heat and I look forward to seeing everyone at our next outing.

I know every inch of this place. I had the privilege of growing up on the campus here back in the mid to late 1980's, while my father was going to school to become a Lutheran pastor. It is truly a beautiful place, and one of my all-time favorite places in the country.

Someone asked if it was okay to revisit the site again before submitting photos. The answer is yes... this is the real world. That is exactly what happens when you work for clients. If you are not satisfied with your images, it isn't likely that your client will either. Revisit if needed and just submit your images by Friday at 5. Great question!

I'm really glad I was able to make this shoot, even though I was about two hours late. Thanks, Tim, for organizing this! Unfortunately, I wasn't happy with most of my photos from the shoot, so instead of uploading three separate images, I made up a quick ad (containing three images that work fairly well together) that could be printed on a postcard or whatever else may be fitting. I just didn't want to not post something. :-)

I've picked up a wide angle lens to experiment for this shoot. If anyone has suggestions and can help me tomorrow at the shoot, it would be most appreciative.

How did it go Jess? Did you get to try the new wide angle lens?

It was a good experience. I did get the wide angle lens. It's definitely a different style of photography than I'm use to. I like more detailed/telescopic pictures, but it was nice to try something outside of my comfort zone. ;-)

Just a quick and gentle reminder.... in regards to those that wish to participate in the friendly challenge that I discussed on site Saturday morning. I asked for a maximum of three images, all of which needed to be in color, and their purpose was to capture the essence of Concordia Seminary for an upcoming Fall advertising campaign. The advertising director needs supporting images to support a marketing campaign for recruiting new seminarians. I am asking three professional photographers that I know to review the images after the submission deadline next Friday at 5 PM. I didn't want to "judge" based on my personal relationships with everyone. Let's see what the judges think next Saturday. I would also encourage you to slow down, reflect and think about your images. This reflection time will help you grow and think about your images as well. Try and imagine you were commissioned for this assignment and being paid as a professional before you submit your final images. Tim

Awesome time today with everyone. Just a quick note about the challenge. Submit your three best images by 5pm next Friday and I will select the best image set and also a single best image by next Saturday. Your grand prize is an entire dollar and bragging rights to taunt everyone with at the next meetup. Keep in mind the criteria that we discussed for the Fall ad campaign, because I will be viewing the images from that perspective. Also, keep in mind not to over process your images by over saturating, over sharpening, etc. I look forward to see what everyone comes up with.

You can download a map of the seminary here: http://www.csl.edu/about-us/campus-map-hours/

the sun will be coming up from the north east which is facing the front of the tower. Sunrise is at 5:47, if you are facing the tower from the street the sun will be circling left and will be creating hard shadows around 9 or 10.
