Do you want to meet new people and make real friends? This happens over and over again in this friendly local group. The group's goal is to provide a way for you to meet new friends. We are not so much a social group, but more a group of friends who do stuff together via the online events but offline too. I have made friends for life, and I hope you do too.
What can we offer you?
Since this group began in November 2011 we have held almost 1,250 events (and if I am too busy to update this page, it might have exceeded that number) which means we have quite a lot going on. We slow down a little in the winter, and then get busier in the spring and summer with a brilliant Christmas party to end the year with friends and lots of wonderful memories.
Regular events include late weekend nights, dancing, live bands, ten pin bowling, meeting for a Saturday morning coffee (think Carrie Bradshaw and friends rather than twin set and pearls), movie nights (the Cineworld group within this group is growing with many members being Unlimited members), a book club, pub crawls in town and out of town, singles nights, Sunday afternoon tea and one of my favourites - board games nights.
We also plan in days out to London, Cambridge, Milton Keynes, and discover new places to go all the time, and for most of it, we make it up as we go along.
What are we like?
Do you ever think about what you did before life got serious, and wonder if you can still do some of those things? You probably can still go on the swings, climb trees, dance for hours, play football, cartwheel, etc... you just need someone to encourage you. That's us - we tend not to do 'sensible', and are not worried about getting muddy or even jumping in a puddle. Being sensible is necessary for work but not when you're with the 30s &40s. You're supposed to laugh, smile and talk for hours about absolutely nothing important and remember the laughs more than the conversations - the one liners are the best. I've so many memories that take me back to some great nights. If you are looking for 'age appropriate, that's fine, but we are probably not for you.
Everyone has to attend that 'first event', and you will find most of our members haven't forgotten either - you'll be made to feel welcome. You must be prepared to make an effort, but we will hold your hand (not literally) to help you until you settle in.
This sums up why the 30/40s exists - no-one should face a weekend alone wishing Monday would come so they could get back to work. I used to.
THE SMALL PRINT
I pay Meetup for use of the website, plus other group expenses. I choose not to charge a membership fee for you to join and am happy to do so. If you enjoy coming along and want to buy me or the hosts a coffee once in a while that would be great, but only if you want to.
• Photo - you must include a photo that we would recognise you from - no sunglasses and tops on please (swimwear might be ok for your FB profile but we want you dressed on our site). !
• Profile questions - complete them as asked - we are looking to see if you will fit in with our group mindset (read above for a clue!)
If you do not complete the profile or include a photo (as above) your request to join will be refused. You are welcome to try again, but just the once.
Code of Conduct/Behaviour
We expect everyone to treat others as they would wish to be treated. You'll find everyone friendly, although please bear in mind some are shy or still getting used to the group.
Do you have to be single to join?
This group is for friendship, not for dating, but most of us are single or were when we joined. Whilst it's great if you meet someone, those joining with the specific aim of using this site as a 'fishing expedition', please join a dating group. You should feel 'safe' to come along to our events without feeling 'hit on'. We do regular singles nights, with the aim to go out together and meet people outside the group.
How often do you need to attend?
This group is restricted to a local membership of 150 people. We expect new members to come along within the first month of joining. After that, I expect you to come along every 2 months at least so we 'know' who you are. Inactive members are removed to allow room for new members, but are welcome to rejoin at any time subject to there being space.
Please also read the group's objectives and REMEMBER....this is a low cost/low cost group that generally supports local independent businesses. We never intend to exclude anyone due to their budget.
