Club Ride Foothills to the Plains - Metric Century

  • August 3, 2013 · 7:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

WHEN: Club rides take place on alternating Saturdays and Sundays MOST weekends throughout the riding season, and will leave from a convenient Longmont location.

ROUTE: This loop ride will be our FIRST Metric Century of the season, 62 miles of foothills and Plains scenery. We will skirt Carter Lake this time, then head east to Johnstown. Route map is HERE

WHAT: Club rides will have 2 groups. We ride as a close group, two abreast only when it is safe to do so. The Club rides are "NO DROP", we will re-group at the top of hills, and at any turns where necessary.

GROUP 1: Average Speed of about 15 to 18 mph                                       (18-20 on the flats, slower on hills)

GROUP 2: Average Speed of about 13 to 16 mph                                       (faster on the flats, slower on hills)

WHO: This is a road bike ride for people who have experience riding on the road with traffic. Please only sign up if you are confident you can complete the above described ride/route (distance, pace etc).

RIDE NOTES: Rides will roll out no more than 5 minutes after the advertised start time, please arrive early and be ready to roll.

- Come prepared for mechanical breakdowns (bring spare tube, patch kit, tire levers, multi-tool).

- Be sure to bring enough water for the length of the ride, especially with warmer weather ahead of us. As a general rule, one bottle of water is good for 1 hour of riding (8oz per 20 mins of ride time).

DISCLAIMER: We try to ensure the safest cycling experience on all of our rides, but cycling does come with some risk. Our ride leaders are all volunteers, not professional guides. Each member accepts responsibility for their own conduct and safety (including the safety of your bicycle and any other equipment) during club rides. You take part in club rides entirely at your own risk.

Excellent route, suitable roads taking in beautiful scenery mixing foothills and plains but not too intense hill-wise in view of the 100km distance - perfect planning and organisation!

The kindness of Pati and Nick who were God-sends for their help and hospitaliy after my rear tyre blew out on the way back into town is a testament to the kind of people who run, and ride with, this group - and why I so enjoy riding with them.

Man that ride whooped me though - 100km in the desert heat is not for the faint of heart LOL! Nor for dodgy old tyre-walls!! ;-D

The ride was great. Thanks to Pati for redirecting me to the correct course. A great group of riders. Laurie, I tired your suggestion of drinking tonic water and didn't get any cramps during the night, thanks for the suggestion.

Wow, another great ride despite some flats and cramps! I state that you can help cramps with quinine in club soda. It's actually TONIC water, not club soda. Rolf and I swear by it and it keeps the night time cramps at bay.

Note to self: next time, print a copy of the route. :-) A great ride despite my lack of direction!

Hope you all have fun, wish I could be there for this one as it looks like a lot of fun! I'm training for Red Rocks Century-Aug 10 and Tour de Cure Century-Aug 17. This weekend I’ll be doing a much longer ride, so I will not attend for a few weeks.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
