Club Ride to Johnstown

  • Sep 22, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

WHEN: Club rides take place on alternating Saturdays and Sundays MOST weekends throughout the riding season, and will leave from a convenient Longmont location.

ROUTE: FLOOD ROUTE Our route this week was determined by which roads in Boulder County are open, and which ones are safe to travel on a bicycle.

WHAT: Club rides will have 2 or 3 groups. We ride as a close group, two abreast only when it is safe to do so. The Club rides are "NO DROP", we will re-group at the top of hills, and at any turns where necessary.

GROUP Abici: This group will be at a faster pace                                                    (17 to 19mph average).

GROUP Basso: This group will be at a medium/fast pace                                           (15 to 17mph average).

GROUP Cinelli: This group will be at a medium pace                                                 (13 to 15mph average).

WHO: This is a road bike ride for people who have experience riding on the road with traffic. Please only sign up if you are confident you can complete the above described ride/route (distance, pace etc).

RIDE NOTES: Rides roll out no more than 5 minutes after advertised start time, please arrive early & be ready to roll on time.

- Come prepared for mechanical breakdowns (bring spare tube, patch kit, tire levers, multi-tool).

- Be sure to bring enough water for the length of the ride, especially with warmer weather ahead of us. As a general rule, one bottle of water is good for 1 hour of riding (8oz per 20 mins of ride time).

DISCLAIMER: We try to ensure the safest cycling experience on all of our rides, but cycling does come with some risk. Our ride leaders are all volunteers, not professional guides. Each member accepts responsibility for their own conduct and safety (including the safety of your bicycle and any other equipment) during club rides. You take part in club rides entirely at your own risk.

Patti and Nick, an excellent ride as always. Way to keep the group together and safe. We get a challenge but also keep the camaraderie .

you all do such a great job!! Thanks for scouting and keeping us safe. Such a gift after the flood ordeal!

Hey folks. looks like we should have perfect cycling weather Sunday!. 62F to start out, 70-72f by ride end, and partly cloudy. A light jacket may be needed starting out if you feel the cold :).

The route we picked this week should be 90% clear of any flood damage. We will use a little more caution than usual though, watch out for debris on the roads, point it out to riders, and perhaps give each other a little more room when riding in the group. Thanks :).

Thanks for the update Sam! 17th is ours. :)

We may run into the biking piece of a triathlon on 17th.

    • Sam M.

From what I have heard, there are NO organized bike events for 30 days, the TRI is probably not happening. Venus was cancelled as an "organized event".

      September 20, 2013

    • Nick M.

Sam you are correct, Without Limits has postponed the Tri event that was scheduled this weekend - so we are good to go using 17th st!.

  • Rick M.

For that short of distance, we may be ok on 17th. Just stay further to the left of the road.

Do have a look at our route and note that we will be riding +/- 3.5 miles south on 287. This would certainly not be a choice we would normally make, for ourselves or with a group, however, other options are not available at this time. There is a wide bike lane/shoulder and with awareness and caution we can ride safely.

Do you have a mapped version of the ride that I can check out?
    Thanks

Hi Philip, Pati has the route posted below in her comments, and also above in the Event info where it says Route. Hope you can join us Sunday!.

Our ride this weekend starts from ZIGGI'S on FRANCIS STREET and was determined/created by which roads in Boulder County are open, and which ones are safe to travel on a bicycle. http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3369951

Thanks so much for scouting out a doable ride. Much appreciated!

  • Steve S.

Jim McMillan rode NCAR on Saturday. If you can find a series of roads to get there, that is a fun ride.

    September 16, 2013

    • Nick M.

Hey Steve, we did ride to NCAR a 1-2 months or so ago, but the best/safest rte from Longmont is not going to be rideable by this weekend :(.

Lefthand Canyon Dr is inundated, the last I saw. And CO 7 is wiped out. :(

We'll most likely be changing our ride route for this date, Harrison, keep an eye on this comments section.

Yes this ride will likely be postponed/altered, we will edit accordingly next week :).

Darn it!! I'm going to miss this one. I love this ride, but it falls smack dab in the middle of my Europe trip. :(

Alison, actually I think the whole group needs to come with me. There's good cycling in Croatia, Slovenia and Hungary after all. :)

OK!! I agree that's a much better idea...when does our flight leave?
