"The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg

Our July book selection is "The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business" by Charles Duhigg.

In "The Power of Habit," award-winning New York Times business reporter Charles Duhigg takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed.

Please note that we are meeting on July 25th. There will be no meeting in August. We will return to our usual schedule on the first Thursday of September. Enjoy your summer!

I was very interested to hear of the reported "fact" that positive and negative words affect ice crystal formation. As a trained scientist, I'm rightly skeptical of such fantastic claims and did a little investigation. Masaru Emoto is noted for published a book called "The Messages in Water" but has not published an article in any reputable scientific journal, his methodologies have been severely criticized, attempts to replicate his findings have not confirmed by other scientists, and he supposed has not conducted a double-blind tests that would remove the bias between the individual who exposes the ice crystals to different stimuli and the individual who actually photographs the crystals. I'm a firm supporter in scientific literacy, and like ghosts, witches, power of astrology and other pseudoscientific claims need to be rigorously tests before people spread such information as fact. Thanks for the ear.
    See you all in September.
Accepting other good book recommendations as well!

interesting perspective...I found the book fascinating and since I buy the premise of words having immense power it did not seem that far fetched to me...Not being a scientist I guess I took it more easily with a pound of salt...I can see where you stand with resect for your standards,,,,I still remain more neutral..I hope he can come up with more proves.. If I have it correctly he is accepted with some respect in the scientific world but I could be listening to the more unproven sources,,,

Thank you all for an enlightening and motivating discussion. The practical applications that were shared are inspiring. Bruce, I went for a walk instead of opening the jar of pistachios. Ashok, there is a place for your "Words" habit in my school and I am going to bravely present this book at our first faculty meeting as my best summer read (with a plan; please share what you can). Anastasia, thank you for bringing us together and facilitating with such openness; you set the tone!
