Hello Yackers, It's time again to explore the Thimble Islands in Branford. This year we hope to have people from the Branford Kayak Group, and other groups join us. It's a full day with lunch on Outer Island (Stewart B. Mc Kinney National Wildlife Refuge) and picnic on the beach afterward (see below).
If you've never been to the Thimbles it is SOOOO worth the trip. Last year we had a blast. It's a great paddle in an amazingly beautiful setting with a great group of people. For people who are new to the group please join us you'll have a lot of fun. We'll have a grill. Everyone should bring the yummies! : wine (and glass), or beer, or cheese and crackers, or something to grill (no hamburgers and hot dogs, what ever you bring will get cut up into finger food), also bring a blanket or chair, etc.
Please add a note to your RSVP saying what you'll be bringing. We don't want to end up with 100 pounds of potato salad. And if you bring wine, bring a cork screw!
Good food items to bring are: pepperoni, summer sausage, salmon and crackers, grapes, strawberries, cheese, Hor'dourves, whipped cream cheese, cracker spread, pattie, etc. To grill: bring marinated steak, marinated chicken breast, sausage, shrimp, chicken wings, salmon patties, etc. we will share with each other. We may need a second portable grill. Please indicate if you will bring a grill. REMBER, to moderate how much you bring. Do not try to feed everyone. We will have too much food. Bring approximately enough for you and two other people. If everyone does this then we will have plenty without much waste.
So ...here's the plan...We'll meet at the park next to the Town Dock boat ramp at 10:00 for a 10:30 launch. Unload your boat and then you'll need to find a parking spot. The parking lot is fairly limited so you may need to find a spot further away and walk a little. However this time of year it may not be so bad.
Directions: Exit 56 off I-95 North Take a right off exit Proceed 2 miles to stop sign Continue straight, pass under train bridge. Continue straight until you see water on your right.
For those of you who MUST have coffee there is a Dunkin Donuts off of the same exit, only take a left instead of a right and you'll see it. Dunkin' Donuts at 33 Leetes Island Rd, Branford, CT 06405, USA. Grab your coffee and then meet us at the dock.
Everybody must have a proper sea-kayak. If you need to rent a kayak call Action Sports in Branford to make arrangements. They recommend calling 5 days in advance to reserve. Action Sports - Branford 324 West Main Street Branford, CT 06405 (203)[masked] Prices (call for current prices) were 4 hours for $40 and Full day 10-5pm for $55 (you'll probably need the full day).
Bring some food for a mid-paddle lunch and lots of water as we will be out for several hours. We'll land on Outer Island to picnic. customarily we also bring some food and drink to share for the after paddle hanging out. There are often picnic tables in the park but some times they are not available. We will probably spread out on the grass. If you have beach chairs you may want to toss them in your car.
Please make sure to bring proper clothes. It is late summer/early autumn it can be warm but it may be chilly out there (and if you get wet you'll get cold). Try to avoid cotton as it will actually suck the heat out of you if it gets when. Something synthetic like Neoprene is the best. If you have a wetsuit or Neoprene top I would suggest having it. If not a windbreaker under your vest would be a good idea. Fleece is also good. And, bring a change of cloths. The picnic usually ends up going until dark.
The average air temperature in Sept is 75 (But the weather is weird these days so we'll see as we get closer). The average water temp 67. For those of you interested in the tides, here is the tidal chart for Branford Harbor for Sept 13 2008. http://www.mobilegeog...41.2667° N,[masked]° W The photo above is a map of the islands. Click on it to enlarge. It's a good idea to print it out and put it in a gallon Ziploc bag to put on you deck. You should also check the weather and print out a report to have with you as part of you paddle plan.
One last issue, if you want to carpool, please say so in your RSVP and note where you will be leaving from. This will allow others to contact you directly. Hopefully we'll have great weather.
Hello Kayakers - We will check tides and the weather and let everyone know. We will paddle out to the Stewart B. Mc Kinney National Wildlife Refuge and have lunch, paddle around the islands to sight see and return to the beach to grill and chill. We will have a gas grill, you can bring something to share if you wish. Hope to see you all, be safe!
