Fossil Point kayak tour with SLO Coast Kayaks (Avila)

UPDATE (5/27/13)

Here are the details about the Fossil Point kayak tour with Avila Beach Paddlesports: Sat July 20, 8AM, meet at their Port office

There is a maximum of 10 paddlers so sign up soon.

This is a kayak only event. They recommend renting all gear from them as there will be some action around the rocks. Only sit-on-top single kayaks are allowed, and the price is the same if you use your gear (but please talk to Vince before doing so!). They are giving our meetup group a discount, and cost is $60. See http://www.slocoastkayaks.com/tours/ for more details about the tour. The tour will include all gear, water, snack, a photo CD, and  the best guide: Vince! This is a fun and educational tour, and he will teach us how to safely paddle in the surf zone. Plan on about 4 hours for the tour.

Everyone going needs to contact Vince & Em (Avila Beach Paddlesports [masked]) in advance to reserve their spot. They take visa/mc to hold the reservation. There is a 24 hour cancellation policy because they set everything up on the beach prior to the tour. After you make your reservation, please add a comment in this event indicating such (so we know who to expect). In other words, a "yes" rsvp in the meetup group only means you're going if you contacted them!

This is probably not a trip for first-timers, so please browse their website and Facebook pages for pictures from the tour to be sure this adventure is for you! They will give us some instruction to help us be better kayakers and for when we get to the fun stuff at Fossil Point! The Fossil Point Tour can be a little to a lot more strenuous than flatwater paddling in the harbor, depending on the swell and wind. The tour entails several miles of paddling, lots of excitement, and there's a good chance of going for a swim (part of the fun).  We go looking for action in Fossil Point!
If there is a large summer south swell, we will unfortunately have to cancel the tour. If this is the case, there will be no charge, of course.

Vince sent me a couple of attachments about the tour. If I can't figure out how to attach them, please send me (Laurie) a message through this meetup and I'll email them to you. One attachment has basic information about the tour, and the other is the tour waiver. Everyone needs to review the tour tips and bring their completed waiver the morning of the tour, in order to get everyone out on the water more quickly.

Remember, everyone participating needs to be at the Avila Beach Paddlesports port office before the 8AM start time. Thanks.

As of 10:30am on July 13, eight people are signed up with Avila Beach Paddlesports for the Fossil Point tour. That only leaves two spots available (max group size is ten). Everyone going MUST make payment arrangements with ABP by this Thursday pm. If you signed up and cannot make it, please contact ABP and also indicate on the meetup.

I am planning on actually coming on Wednesday for a 5pm night paddle and will rent a board from you so we can charge my card then if you want or i can just pre-pay for Saturday, let me know what works for you.

I'm interested in going and I have my own kayak to use. I have an above seat Cobra navigator. I have a 10 ft. and a 12 ft. What do you mean by experience? I don't have experience out in the ocean. I've paddled around the Port San Luis and at lakes.

The group size is limited to 10 kayakers for this event. Vince prefers that everyone use their equipment. Everyone MUST contact Avila Beach Paddlesports to make payment arrangements for this event - an RSVP to the meetup does not mean you have a spot. Please talk to Vince or Em at Avila Beach Paddlesports for more info about what the tour will experience.

    Going camping that weekend

    June 22, 2013

  • Laurie

As of noon today June 22 only six people have contacted Avila Beach Paddlesports to secure your spot. Need four more people to do so! Em said that if you call them and no one answers, please try to call again later. They have been super busy renting at the port.

    June 22, 2013

  • Michele

Per the shop this afternoon, only 4 of the 10 of you signed RSVP'd Yes on the meetup site are actually signed up with the shop, so this is your friendly reminder to actually call the shop, and if you are not going, make room for others, k?

    June 8, 2013

  • Claudia

Any chance we can add an additional kayaker or can they only do 10, I would love to join the paddle

    June 7, 2013

    • Laurie

Vince needs the group to be max of 10 people for safety reasons. But remember that an RSVP on this meetup group is only accurate if you've contacted Avila Beach Paddlesports and have made payment arrangements! Is everyone doing so?

      June 7, 2013

    • Michele

I've added a 'waitlist' if anyone backs out....

      June 8, 2013

  • Michele

There is now a 'Paddle Avila' meetup scheduled for those of you who want to get together and paddle before the barbq/get togehter on the beach

    June 8, 2013

  • Michele

Just so you know, the only changes I made are the fact that I put in a 'wait list'. So up to a week before you can cancel, and let someone take your spot!

The files with the Fossil Point Tour info and Fossil Point Tour waiver are available by clicking on "more" (under our meetup group's name) and then selecting "files". If you have problems accessing them, just send me (Laurie) a message through this meetup and I'll email them to you. Thanks.

Lets plan a beach day at Hartford beach, barbecue and meetup for members. It would be fun to finally meet the group! BYOE (drinks have to inconspicuous , no bottles etc) and something to share. Showers are available across parking lot from Avila Paddlesports after tour, dogs welcome, let's say noon?
Ill set up a separate meetup for this!
